To celebrate the first birthday of LearnNavi.org org, and the beginning of our journey with the Na'vi language, we are hosting a:

Na'vi Writing Contest

There are two classes (beginner and advanced) and two categories (prose and poetry).  You only get to enter once, so please think carefully about what you submit and in which category.  Please keep the word count to between 150 and 170 words (that's slightly longer than Paul's reply on MaSempul.org).  If you cross that, the judges may get cross, too, but it can certainly be shorter if you feel you've said exactly what you want to in fewer words.

Your work should be about the Na'vi language or somehow relating to LN.org and the general Na'vi language community.

Judging

There are three judges: me, Prrton and Lance R. Casey.  My thanks to both of them, for not running away when I contacted them to do this.

What we'll be looking for, in order of importance:

1. Grammatical correctness.  (With some leniency for beginners.)
2. Faithfulness to the topic (the language or language community).
3. Elegant ways of talking around missing vocabulary.
4. Style and Panache.

Points start coming off if you go over the word limit.  ;)

Submitting

Submissions are by email.

1.  The subject line should say what class and category you're entering, so one of "Beginner Prose," "Beginner Poetry," "Advanced Prose" or "Advanced Poetry."

2.  Tell us your LN.org login ID in the email.  (Remember, you get one submission!  Note that only I will know who wrote a work — the other two judges won't see names attached to works.)  If you want to collaborate with someone, please include the ID of everyone who worked on it.

3.  Email your submission to [email protected].

4.  All submissions must be received by the end of the day December 17th GMT.

The Prize

There will be a first and second place winner for each of the groupings (so, four firsts and four seconds).

When I first came up with this idea, I had no idea what we could possibly give people as a prize.  Any Avatar-related object would be silly, since there'd be a good chance the winner would already have it.  So, giving objects didn't seem practical.   Instead, we'll give fame, with a little help from Paul Frommer.

Paul will post the winning entries on his blog (along with whichever name you prefer attached to your work).  First place winners might get to suggest a word or a structure for the language, but we've not worked out the details of that yet.

We still need to schedule this with Paul, but I hope to announce the second place winners by the actual birthday of LN.org itself, December 21, and first place winners a day or two after that.

I may be trash at poetry, but if there's one thing I can do in this world it's prose.

Am I to assume that we have to attach an English translation as well?

Nope.  I'd rather people didn't, actually.

Wou, this sounds like a ton of fun. But now I'll all intimidated because there are a ton of people here way better than me. Oh well, might as well give it a shot and hope I get lucky.  ;D Need to brush up on my grammarness. And decide whether to do poetry or prose. And what exactly to write about. So many possibilities. @.@

How about making the mods honorary participants, in that they can enter, but can't win anything...

I'd be happy to offer my writing as a birthday present to the community.
