If you look down, ignoring the names of many brilliant and esteemed academics, you'll see my name in there. As the ex-president of the Language Society (last year), I'm going to be giving a talk on what I've learned from ten months on Learn Na'vi about conlangs, their communities, and their justification. It should basically be a fun talk introducing conlangs to people who may not know much about them.

I thought it would be proper to let you guys know. If you're in the area, do come along! It'd be great to have some grassroots support. If you can't make it, don't worry, I'll barely have been off the plane for a day (after the Na'vi conference in California).

Also, anyone have any suggestions for what I should talk about? I don't think prrkxentrrkrr can take up an hour of lecturing...

Pullum may be the head of your department, but I know him from LL, one of my favoritest blogs ever.

For a crowd of linguists, I would focus on conlangs as a way to rope people into serious linguistics.  I doubt most people on this site are going to run out and get a degree in linguistics, but it would not surprise me if at least a few do, or at the very least take an intro class they might not otherwise have.  I mean, show them this: Na'vi Vowels.  How often does an amateur wander off to do formant analysis?

Ma Taronyu, i'd totally be there if i weren't on the wrong side of the Pond  :(

Do keep us all posted, though—and if there's any sort of recording made, i'd love to see/hear it!

Good luck on both endeavors. Too bad you won't be able to swing past Reno while you are here. But just think-- your head will be brimming with ideas when you get back home, and you will probably run over speaking.... :D

Oh, I forgot to say how it went!

It went great. 75 people came. I entertained them for an hour. And then we went to the pub.

Truly cool.

I just need to transcribe a video or two, because of this weird background noise. As soon as I have some freetime, I'll do that. And then I'll put the Youtube videos back up. :)

And here we are, complete with subtitles. After hours of slaving away.

Apologies if I offend anyone. I did also make errors. Alas, I am not perfect.
