i don't know anything about hl2 modding but how should this work? it's only a textfile. wouldn't a chopper require at least geometry and texture files ?

It's an advanced duplicator file. It's a tool for copying and pasting welded objects in Garrys Mod. It's basically some kind of blueprint rather than a model but can server the same cause.

has anyone tried to convert the files from the original game.

i found a way to decompress the the proprietrary archives, but i havn't found a tool to covert the model/textures into usable formats.

quick guide:
download 1 & 2
start 1
select 2
select C:\Program Files (x86)\Ubisoft\James Cameron's AVATAR - DAS SPIEL\Data_Win32 (different on your pc ;) )
select output folder
wait ~15 min

now you can browse the files.
eg: samson seems to be made out of these files:
\data\graphics\av_vehicles_corp\samson_pilotable
