I asked the curator, Brooke Peck, why the exhibit opened in Seattle in the first place, and he said that James Cameron had been talking to Paul Allen. (Allen owns probably 95% of the stuff in the Sci-Fi Museum part, none of which is currently on display, and he's the co-founder of Microsoft.) I'd imagine that since the EMP spent the money to design and collect the exhibit, they want to earn as much as they can before sending it on tour.

Not to mention it costs a lot and takes a long time to set up an exhibit like that. It's not really a traveling show in it's current configuration.

Paul Allen, that explains the Microsoft Surface's that were there.

Paul Allen also owns the building I work at hehe. NOT that that means I can talk to him or anything. He's rarely there, I've only seen him once...as I was escorting him out to his car with my supervisors. No way I could have said anything to him then, I would have been sooo fired!

Thw Worldcon science fiction convention may be in Seattle next year, as well (at minimum, there is a major science fiction convention there). Just caught that detail this morning, and need to research it a little further.

After that, the meetup can move around.

Long-term, we may find that we don't need to follow the Avatar exhibit around. We may even have our own traveling exhibit.

I just checked Worldcon's website.  They are saying Chicago for 2012.  But I don't know if that's official yet or if there's another con in the Seattle area near the time of our meet-up.
We'll have to check that out, see if the Chicago news is official.

The Worldcon locations will be:
2011 Reno
2012 Chicago
2013 San Antonio (tentative)
2014 London (only bid so far)
2015 Spokane ( only bid so far)

Washington conventions include Emerald City Comicon, early March in Seattle; Norwescon, Easter weekend in Seattle; Sakuracon, also Easter weekend in Seattle; SpoCon, midAugust, Spokane; and in 2012 Westercon, 4th of July weekend, Seattle.
Westercon is probably what you were thinking of, Tim: www.westercon65.org

Maria TunVrrtep

Thanks, Jane.
I'm glad we stayed away from July 4th weekend.

Thanks. I saw Chicago (and Westercon in Seattle) when I looked in my Worldcon literature when i got home.

Will we be meeting with Paul Frommer again?

Will we have set locations planned out to go to on certain days so that everybody might get what they want?

Will the place we are staying keep us ALL TOGETHER this next time? Lol having to go all over the Travellodge was a bit annoying.

Jake: How will I know if she chooses me?
Neytiri: She will try to kill you.
Jake: Outstanding. *takes out an ikran-catcher and walks through hometree looking for women*

We are working with the EMP|SFM and will soon be working with hotels. As soon as we have verified information, we will post it out to all of you.

Seattle because thats where the Avatar stuff is.

srane, tam, slä; again, how is it fair? jw. it's not exactly easy for someone who lives in upstate New York to get to Seattle. I'll try, I guess. but my baby will probably be only eight-nine months old so I may not be able to come.

Irayo,

And of course you are a member of a clan.  You are a member of LearnNavi.org.
The clans we are referring to are the different forums and websites.  So you are definitely a part of our clan.

It is not about clans, this is for Avatar fans. But Uniting the Clans is the sub-title for this event, as it is the first of its kind.

It sucks that it's not local to everyone. But many of us have to travel. Costs me about $600 in plane tickets alone from Alaska to Seattle. Now if I could fly an Ikran down...

Any and all Avatar fans are welcome!
The "Uniting the Clans" is part of the name because:
A) It highlights that we were unorganized this year and ended up being 2 events, next year it's just one.
B) It fits the theme of the film calling on all Na'vi to gather.
C) It sounds cool. <---important one right there.

And Txura Roylu, all great questions that we are working on answers to. We are preparing a survey to post soon with questions about exactly this sort of stuff to get a little more structured input for the planning. But of course feel free to ask stuff on the forums also.

Oh, okay, now I understand that the "uniting clans" thing is about bringing together people from different forums. Awesome. Well, I'm happy to declare membership in this clan!
