Do you use a mathematical computing software?

Matlab
Stata
R
Other
A calculator
None

DJ Makto

Going to post this to breath some life into the Math forum.

I am a former STATA user turned R-project aka R convert. ;D

  • Other: Scilab

We used Matlab here at university but the license authentication stuff is crap. I need either a working WPN tunnel everytime I want to use it or refresh the license every 30 days (which didn't work on my last attempt). Therefore I switched to the open source Scilab which is mostly compatible to Matlab (at least the base feature set).

None now.

I messed around with matlab once when I was bored once though, and used Microsoft Math for calculus class (easy way to find integrals...)

Ah, yes.

My friend showed me that last semester. We used it to check a few calculus problems we had for extra credit. Thing's amazing :D

at various times and for various problems I've used Mathematica, Matlab, matcad, R and Excel.

Now I'm mostly using Excel+SQL for simple data analysis and reports like log odds and R/Mathematica for "real" problems.

Matlab, definitely (try asking it "why", it can keep you entertained for quite a while). And I have to agree that WolframAlpha is really useful

WolframAlpha is good when it's up and in the mood, and then you can break out Mathematica, and when all else fails there's always the trusty TI-nSpire or HP 50g.

Matlab here, it's surprisingly useful when you're trying to engineer things. Not much use for actual 'programming' though, it's basically a glorified calculator.

I use a Casio Classpad 3000. I also have an emulator of the calculator on my computer. It's awesome.

when will calculators EVER go LCD? (WILL they ever? :P)

When I was taking college algebra in high school, I used my iPod touch's graphing calculator app, beautiful color and smoooth lines. :D (I liked to mess with sine curves and polar coordinates, like who wouldnt? ;D)

it essentially looked like this:

That thing looks REALLY cool. Certainly blows the socks off my TI-83 Plus...

LOL I remember 83 Plus... They had them at school ;D (I only ever owned a scientific (except my iPod, see prev. post), a TI 34 X IIS)

Yayo

Yeah, it is pretty cool.

LOL My teachers always just had an 86 onnected to the overhead projector.. .HAHAHAHA ;D

He doesn't use it in class.. he just showed us it. Anyway, it's so much better than the graphing capabilities of the Cas..

We had one of those in high school. We used it almost daily in Algebra III during homework review (teacher let us use it instead of drawing our graphs on the board...still had to write the work up there though)
