My sister thought it was Japanese or something Asian. Others have said Hawaiian. I've even seen people online notice similarities with some European languages.

If you look at the IPA set we're working with, you'll see pieces taken from many related and unrelated language families. A decently strongish flavor of the Polynesian languages can be found, as Frommer admits. As also quoted earlier in the thread, Paul's goal as confirmed with James Cameron was to select a set that has a "pleasant" sound consistent with James' vision and that is not easily or at all traceable to any single language or language family of Earth. This is why the answer to this question is expected to have decently high amounts of variance if asked of a large and diverse group of people.

Since it's relevant to the topic I've just made an audio post on my blog. I believe it's just shy of 10 mins. :o
