Torukä Nari

I was kinda hoping for a little more help on how to pronounce the glottal stop, especially at the end and beginning of words. That's the one thing about Na'vi pronunciation that gets me every time.

Maybe I'll expand on that in the next one.

That'd be nice, every time I try to pronounce a word like 'eveng, it sounds lik ev'eng.

Yeah, at the beginning/end of a word it still tricks me out. And this damn /r/ stuff also  :'(

*Sigh...*

It's high time I give some feedback here on these pronounciation vids....

I also know this is an old-ish vid, and I wouldn't be surprised if there is some newer audio pronounciation guide out there.

All, good advice. I'll see if I can digest this when I get back from the Language Workshop.

You're definitely right that this is an old vid, very old in fact. I've learned a lot since then and my pronunciation has gotten a lot better. I'm probably not going to change these though, they've been here so long and honestly their close enough to get people started. Maybe sometime in the future I'll redo them but not for now. I'll definitely take your advice to heart though for any future videos.

Anyway, thanks for the detailed analysis, even though it's old it's still good to look back and make sure I don't maintain any bad habits.

Ftiafpi

Alright! Finally got around to working on these again. I recorded another one and have to do some editing and such but I hope to have it up sometime this week or weekend.

I'll also probably go through the first two guide videos and add annotations to point out the errors and suggestions that 'Oma Tirea pointed out. Not sure when I'll get to that but it will happen.

P.S. Anyone else who wants to make a guide and post it or have me post it, feel free. I don't have or want to be the only voice here.

Ftiafpi

A new guide (finally)!

Pronuncation Guide #3

YouTube: Guide 3

So, finally got another guide out. Sorry for the long delay, I kept getting busy with one thing after another. Hopefully though I can update these a little more regularly now. This guide follows the first few lines from the "getting to know you" section of Dr. Frommer's Na'vi Teri blog.

I'll probably make more of these soon. Also, as always, please point out any mistakes in my guide (I'm sure there's plenty) and I will fix them.

Txantsan, ma Ftiafpi! Nì'i'a!

First, I could listen to you all day :) You have the perfect voice for doing audiobooks ;)

Only think I noticed: If I'm not mistaken the consonants of tìng‿mikyun merge and become [tımikjun], same as tìng nari becomes [tınaɾi]

Interesting observation of yours, the double-nasal merging to the second across word boundaries...  oddly enough, I didn't really get that in the most recent vid posted here, and ma Ftiafpi, that is a good thing :)

Also good: you did a much better job overall, in particular with handling the Na'vi e and ng :)

I think this is also due to the fact that it's a pronunciation guide with a word-for-word pronunciation. It's absolutely normal that we speak differently when pronouncing every word individually or whether we speak at normal conversation speed.

These vids have been very helpful. Irayo :) Keep 'em coming.

I still have trouble with the r sound but hopefully I'll get it right one of these days.
