Thanks a ton :D will be adding these to my growing desktop folder of Na'vi stuff

could that be her, trying to make him pronounce "ngati"?
after all, it's not a real r, but the alveolar stop they talk about, and the ng is barely audible.
just throwing it out there.

I think we are talking here about the word "Nari" (eye). :) And the pronounciation of the "r" or so...

Taronyu Ayunilyä Alahe

wowwiiee! this is awesome. I would love to see more. but, about the 'ikran sound file', is Neytiri saying Taron somewhere in the middle? Because, as I read, it was supposed to be pronounced 'Gadon' while Neytiri said something more like Adon...  :-\

alveolar stop + adon. it's very soft, and it's neither r, g, t or d :)

either? or neither?
if it's either, I bet the answer would be 'gadon' because it was written in an interview with Paul Frommer himself. I guess.  ;)

It's neither, because written language has a problem with the glottal stop.
Think of the part in the movie where Neytiri tries to teach Jake the word "Nari"
it's not quite an "r" :)

I had to completely get away from think /r/ is an r, its not.  Whenever I see an /r/ now, I break the word down around the /r/ sound.  Lets take "nari" for example, its "na" + /r/ + "i".  What the /r/ is telling us is that we need to perform an alveolar tap between the "a" and "i".  The tap is nothing more than tapping your tongue on the alveolar ridge while transitioning from the "a" to the "i".  Depending on what your transitioning between, the /r/ may sound like anything from an "d" (nari) to an "l" (ikran) to a mix of "d" and "r" together (toruk).

She says:

- "To become taronyu, "hunter", you must chose your own ikran, and he must chose you."

but you can barely hear the "t", so it sounds like aronyu.

Now talking about the "r", i've been noticing people is having a lot of trouble with it, like in the word nari (eye)

the sound of the "R" is the same in the word literature.
If I got it right, in portuguese we have many words with this sound, so it wasn't a mystery for me, but in english I could just figure out this one.

hope it could help in any way. correct me if I'm wrong ^^

I don't think we are both pronouncing literature the same.  In my area, literature has a pretty strong English r sound.  (I live in Indiana, USA btw)

That helped me a lot, actually! I was having a lot of trouble getting the sound right, until I read your post. My little brother's name is "DeAndre" -- never thought to pronounce the /r/ the same way as I do when I say his name. Now I have something to relate the sound to. It made it a lot easier, lrayo!
