James Cameron - citizen scientist.  And sorta like Elon Musk...just because he can.

Many ocean-going exploration vessels have "challenger" in the name.

Thank you for the reassurance, ma Toruk Makto.   I just don't want anything to happen to him, especially now...and I think the major reason for his voyage is Avatar 2, kefyak?

James Cameron has a history of scientific exploration of the oceans for the sake of science itself. With that said, it is almost certain that a lot of the footage he will get will find a part in the next two Avatar films.
Well, it really seems that Avatar 2 take place under top of the ocean...

I think he did this just to see if he could. The man has an attachment to the ocean that to you and I is like breathing. It fascinates him and I am glad he was able to make this dive, for himself. And we all got to go along and watch.
