As long as the movies are good enough, keep them coming.
But not if they are poor copies of the original.
I can only think of one set of sequels that didn't finally end on a lemon, Lord of The Rings.
And maybe star wars, but only maybe, IMO.
I can't imagine Avatar without cameron, but who knows...

That's what concerns me a little with the whole "since the fans are so receptive, we can do more spiritual stuff in the sequel" bit.  In theory it could be very cool, but that kind of thing doesn't always make for a good movie.  It's going to be a careful balancing act between adding more cultural and spiritual elements and keeping the movie within what are usually considered the bounds of a good movie (keep in mind hardcore fans are usually way off on what is considered a "good" movie in their respective fandoms).  I don't want to see the sequel stray too far into the cultural area and lose sight of the things required to make a movie a good movie.

It's true... I would love so much to learn more about the culture and spirit of the Na'vi but shoving it all in 3 hours and not really making it a great movie would be lame, It needs to be a balance. I think all Cameron was really saying was that they can add a little bit more of the culture and spirituality of the Na'vi now they know how the fans received it. I doubt he'll make major mistakes such as you suggested though.
