I'm hoping that James Cameron commissions someone (or even writes it himself) a book adaptation of the movie.  I have been looking feverishly for such a book and have not found it.

So do i. It'll be cool to have a book based on the script.  ::)
Because it'snot so convenient to read the original script.

I went looking for one as well! ;D I think there will be one soon. There usually are for big movies like this. <3

Aha! I thought I had seen an article on this:

Saw a different article floating around here somewhere, said he was going to.  AND it seems as if he will not hire the guy who wrote Aliens (if I remember correctly).  Seems like he'll write it himself, in which case I sue hope he writes the story according to the original script, instead of what's in the movie (few subtle changes, but they make all the difference).

bad idea.
Cameron should focus on next film. We have movie, script it's enought for me  8)

I don't think it's a bad idea to make a book out of it.  It IS a bad idea to be working on it while making the other movies, though.

As long as he pumps the script out and finishes the filming, I wouldn't mind if he worked on writing the book while the movie went through the special effects process.

Avatar is a movie about a guy with blue balls running through the forest chasing tail.

James Cameron said in an interview that he will write the book himself as soon as the dust of the release settles.
At this point he is probably already on it or has even already finished it. But from there it still may take a few month to get it on the book shelves. Proofreading, editing, layout, print ... all those things take some time.

He said it would go more in deep and also explain why the Na'vi are so similar to humans.
I'm really hoping for this book as it is an opportunity to learn more about the wider background story and all the dropped side action of the movie. Maybe also more about more the history of the Na'vi.

A book that just retells the movie would indeed be kind of little value (though it would hopefully have all the Na'vi sentences and in correct transcription)

Very true.

Here's what I want to know: the movies from here on out have to be modified to fit the script of the final release.  However, if he writes the book based on the 2007 script, which had a lot more detail in general, would he make the other books (for 2 and 3) just as detailed to fit the plot of the first?

Please PM me your source on that. I want to discuss that on the podcast. After all, not everyone is reading this thread (although they should!)

Okay, so the old podcast is here: https://www.podomatic.com/podcasts/radioavatar It was goofy fun that ended too soon, but we had creative people. I hope we can get a new gang together (interested? PM me, let's make some magic!)

This was one:
http://www.ugo.com/movies/dont-expect-an-alan-dean-foster-version-of-camerons-avatar

QuoteJames Cameron: Yeah, we'll do as much as possible to do.  I wanted to get the bible worked out so that these things didn't generate conflicting ideas or conflicting plotlines with things I would want to do in the sequels, or with each other.  That was the purpose of generating Pandorapedia, working out the backstory and the future history.

JH: And you don't have any of those deals worked out with comic creators or...

JC: Not right now, that's really going to be a second wave, including a novel which I hope to have time to write myself.

JH: Oh, you're not going to punt that to Alan Dean Foster.

JC: No, he would probably be the last person I would choose...

There are more but that takes more digging ...

Saw Cameron on a Charlie Rose interview in which he indicated that he will, indeed, be finishing up a book within the next couple of months.  I cannot wait for this.  I would hope that it creates a series like Dune (which I love to no end).

I hope the book makes it within this year - and rather sooner than later.
And I also hope it is a lot like Frank Herbert's Dune - not only in volume but also in quality. A whole series would even be better but James Cameron isn't an author and I doubt he will have the time for a full blown series. Maybe if he can find a good Sci-Fi author who can take over from his outlines ...

As for Dune - there is a new movie in the making, to be released in 2012. I hope they get it finally right this time.

At least the movie has a director now.  Again.  We'll see if this one sticks.  I don't have high hopes for any Dune movie, though.

For the books, Cameron should find an author to write them - even the first one.  Focus on the sequels and whatever other projects he's got going on and let a real author write the books with Cameron's overview.

I have to humbly disagree. No one knows Avatar like JC. This has been stomping around inside his head to a few decades now. As an author I know the process, especially when you complete something in spurts. You get started and something stops you, and you have to put it away, but it haunts you, for years, in bits and pieces; and you find other people doing things that are frighteningly similar to ideas you have been sitting on for so long. You NEED to get them out, and no matter how you try to explain them to other people, they don't quite see YOUR vision. As much as I want A2, and even A3, T5 comes first, and maybe even one or two other movies. So there is no way that A2 will come any time soon. It may be alo because A2 may be drastically different from Avatar. It may have always meant to be RDA centered (no one expected it to be the #1 movie of everdom). It is possible the Na'vi have hijacked what was supposed to be a human trilogy. Imagine Aliens in reverse: Humans go to a different planet (moon) but instead of being the good guys (See: Alien, Aliens, Terminator, T2 <--best movie everrrrr! until Avatar that is), maybe WE are the bad guys. Maybe WE are Darth Vader (as in Star Wars was really "all about the rise and fall of Darth Vader").

Maybe, just maybe the Na'vi have overpowered the trilogy--or perhaps JC planned this all along and now he wants to make us wait. (I wish I were smarter--then I would know everything! :) )

But when people who are not novel authors try to write novels, they generally don't come out well at first.  It's a learning process for most people unless they're a rare natural.

Timothy Zahn's first trilogy with the Star Wars EU is a perfect example of what happens when you find a good author who likes the material and is willing to try and keep the feel of the original movie(s).  It's all about finding the right author.

But he's going to write the novel himself, so the point is moot.  We can only hope he is a better writer than most with their early attemps.

Bah! Thrawn made Vader look like a GIRL SCOUT! Thrawn was like Rommel, sent far, far out into nowhere. And Zahn screwed the pooch by killing him. That first book was gold. The next two were disappointing.

But here is a little secret about Hollywood, and famous people "writing books."

JC definitely needs to write the story. But I think nobody would mind if a good and experienced author gives him a little help with style and structure ...
I mean to write a screen play (script) and writing a novel are two very different things in style and content.
