Already, a bunch of books are available on Amazon. I'm really thinking of getting them all, but it's always (lack of) money that gets in the way...

I think there's also some published fiction out there already, and no, not fanfiction...yet.

Actually there already is some fanfiction of Avatar, on FF.net and I think on LJ too, I haven't read any.
Definitely getting the Art book. I bet the concept art for this movie must be amazing!

shiaru

I had joined the fanfiction but it was shallow, unprepared and the people are clueless about Na'vi culture.

I am currently making my way through the second of the books listed.  Pretty interesting stuff so far.  I would LOVE to have that art book!  So much money is going towards Avatar it isn't funny.

mO_Tan

I bought this. Fun read with lots of info, but has anyone else noticed the errata on almost every 5th page? Typos, spelling errors, and even some really glaring mistakes, like they were in a real hurry to type all this up.

It made me sad.

shiaru

I would have to buy the book to see those errors, but I'm broke as things stand.

I shudder at the though that someone has probably already done some slash fic.  I'm thinking Grace/Neytiri...  Maybe a little Jake/Quaritch...  Or Tsu'tey/Jake...

Must scrub my mind now. :P

It makes you wonder who would top though. After all, wouldn't 10ft tall beings be more dominant?

Yes. Shudder.

If anyone missed it, here is the article where James Cameron discusses the novelization of Avatar and his desire to write it himself: http://movieblog.ugo.com/movies/dont-expect-an-alan-dean-foster-version-of-camerons-avatar

Good article, I especially like the inference that there is an encyclopedia of all things Pandora in development.  Unless he is referring to one of the already published books instead of a specific "Pandorapedia" publication.

It was interesting that a poster noticed similarities to the novel Midworld, talk about an obscure Trope to bring up.

Midworld! Wow, I have that and haven't read it in years. I guess I will have to go find it again.

I'm not surprised- some Cameron had stated in some earlier interviews that his original script for the film was about three times too long (IIRC- I could be horribly wrong) and had to be trimmed down a lot.  I'd think he'd like to put much of that back in for a proper novelization.

The Art Book of Avatar, which I bought for my brother to read for Christmas, is an excellent book to feast your eyes on. There's also the Na'vi survival packet book out there for anyone's disposal, but I would read it with a grain of salt. I've heard that it has many inaccuracies, and it was rushed. For example, there are words that are repeated. William also has a problem with one word (baby carriage?) that has a couple of mistakes.

Just goes to show there are pros and cons to what you buy.

I'm not surprised fanfiction.net caught up with the Avatar hype. It's true that alot of the work is produced by beginning writers who don't know their left from right, but there are a few gems.

This is a cool update, hopefully more pronounced books will be published in the future. Perhaps they will come from one of our members!

I bought "The Art of Avatar" and the "Confidential Report" book. The art book is pretty fancy, and I had a hard time finding it! Apparently it's impossible to buy online, unless you want to pay well over the sticker price. It's either out of stock, or only "In Stock" at sites that I've never heard of until trying to find the book. Ended up finding a copy at a local Borders store (for list price... unfortunately I had no Rewards Coupons :( but oh well). The book itself is great, but I have 1 complaint. There are 2 "fold out" pages--1 page 'stretches out' to like 3  pages. That in itself is cool, but they don't stay folded up very well. For both of those cases, the pages got creased and I'm really obsessive about that kind of thing. All the copies (there were 3) were like that, so I couldn't get around it. The art is fantastic though, as well as the information that within the pages. I was hoping for more movie stills. Hopefully there will be some official 8x10's popping up?

The other one is pretty cool too, but it looks like most of the images are simple 3D/CG renderings--they aren't taken from the movie, they simply look like models that were whipped up specifically for the book. In some cases, they kind of had to, but in other cases they could have taken stills from the movie. The information looks pretty great though (I only just got it and haven't actually read through it). It's nice to have a little Na'vi/English dictionary in the back.

I can't wait for a graphic novel, a novel, a scriptbook, etc. I'd even like to see another "Art of" type book but with actual stills, either from the cut of the movie, or behind-the-scenes photos alongside trivia information (sort of like the FRIENDS book).
