Do I need a goofy disk thing to do the Kumihimo? Or is there another way?

Traditionally it was done on a round stand made of wood, which is even harder to use and more expensive than the foam disk.  But you can make the disk out of scrap cardboard.  It's a lot easier and doesn't require precarious balance to keep tension even.  http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=269386.0  This pattern calls for craft foam, but you could use cardboard too.  It has some great pics of the finished braid-- I should have thought to check craftster first!

I own the goofy disk thing and I like it.  It's also a great craft for airplanes-- no sticks, no needles, no metal parts, so nothing to confiscate (or worry about having confiscated).  Just foam and fibers.

Thought of another thing to do at walmart that could get you kicked out: start a battle between humans and Na'vi ;)

Haha. What I think would be sweet would be to make a Na'vi bow. And THEN go into walmart with that!

Back to topic. I made one of those out of insulation foam. Works great, and was totally free! Now to actually start the choker.

Ok here is what I have done so far. The blue is a bit too bright, but it was all i could find. What I'm stuck on now is that blue spiral like knotted thingy. Do you think there are 2 strands of the blue and then a similar cord to the other side attached to the front of that? Also what knot to use? That big long extra string will be trimmed off eventually.

Wow, you are fast!  That looks great.  Have you seen if the blue dye is permanent?  You could always try soaking it in hot water to bleach it out a bit, if it's not.

That blue spiral like knotted thingy is what has gotten me, but I have an idea.  Take two decent sized cords, hold them parallel, and then wrap blue embroidery floss (you can even get variegated floss, or hold a couple of different shades of blue together) around them in a figure eight pattern, essentially weaving them together.  Does that make sense?  Like weaving a rug, but with only two warp threads.  The cords should be big enough to produce that nice look-- maybe even leather lacing would work as a core.  Something to give it enough width to stand out behind the other cord.  And yes, I think the cord on the other side is just the same thing, or a little narrower version of it.  Maybe you could do the spiral pattern chinese crown/lanyard knot, which is only four strings instead of eight, for the other side.  Or kumihimo with four threads instead of eight?  There are tutorials out there: http://www.kumihimo.nl/eng-begin.php  That might be even better.  Do you have blue seed beads?  You can thread some onto your hemp before you start, and then push them down into the kumihimo as you go along, randomly, so they stick out of the sides like they do in the Noble Collection choker.

That is really awesome, and I can't wait to see the rest of it!  My kumihimo disk is currently in use with another project, but I'm going to have to finish that one off so I can start on my Jake-style choker!

I didnt like the little seed beaded look. Plus i figured they would be a HUGE pain to thread on.....this is what i was thinking of maybe doing for that blue thing. Granted it isnt cord but its like little rocklike shells...

My oldest craft is beading, so I don't really see it as a pain.  But you're right, the look is a bit odd.  And this is, after all, about crafting for ourselves, as the Na'vi presumably do, and making pieces unique to us, even if they're inspired by others.

The shell beads you have are very pretty.  They could work, but there isn't a good way that I can see to keep the other smaller cord above them.  Of course, you could just use them both and have two cords together on that side, not necessarily stacked.

I like the bead you have for your centerpiece, too.  Is it wood?

I love that stuff. I bought a Na'vi dagger off Amazon- plastic and has a totally bogus 'body strap'- but is pretty cool looking, and what I am going to use for my Halloween costume this year; however, I'd love to have the one they have in stock there. :D
