Raiden, thanks for bringing that up. I'm not trying to scare anyone here or anything. OLT is truly an "optional" kind of place throughout the entire 4000 acre property. It's not a camp or resort, just a beautiful natural area that many people like to visit au naturale. If folks are uncomfortable with this, I guarantee there are a hundred other cool things to do in the Rio Grande National Forest instead :)  This is intended to be an optional side trip for just the few that are interested anyway, not for the whole group.

Yea, that sounds like a tricky one for sure, It would be awesome to see the bats though, but yea, as for me I'm not sure yet.

Well, I am warned if I ever get to go here.

Anyway, to get back to camping...   ;)

I will be making some detailed maps and writing the directions from Denver to my place and posting here soon.  -M.

Not gonna lie, kinda looking forward to the option of naturalism.

Sounds like that venue might be a little blue.

Here are detailed directions to get from Denver to the camping area at the cabin:

Fastest way (more miles, but less time, ~6 hours):

  • From Denver Airport, follow signs to I-225. Go south on I-225 to I-25 and go south on I-25 past Colorado Springs and Pueblo to Highway 160 at Walsenberg (about 195 miles).
  • Go west on 160 over La Veta Pass, through Ft. Garland and Blanca to Highway 285 in Alamosa (about 70 miles). BTW, there's a Walmart on 160 in Alamosa a few miles past the 285 turn.
  • Go south on 285 for 2.75 miles to Highway 370 and turn right (west).
  • Go just over 14 miles until 370 dead-ends into Highway 15 and turn left (south).
  • Go 2 miles until the pavement ends (there will be a big blue and white metal building on the left and a wooden signboard on the right, also there will be an AVTR sign there with an arrow pointing right).
  • (**) Turn right onto County Road FF/Forest Road 250 which is unpaved. You are 22 miles from the cabin at this point.
  • Follow the winding Forest Road 250. Please note: There is a mildly alarming piece of road that goes past the Terrace Reservoir that has an abrupt drop-off and no guard rails. It's perfectly safe, just watch for oncoming vehicles, because the road is narrow.
  • There is a fork in the road just before the reservoir that U-turns, so go straight. Keep going to Jasper. You'll know you're there, because there is a sign that you are entering Jasper and there's also a cattle guard in the road. Keep going and you will see different colored gates on the right as you drive through the small community.
  • Just past Blowout Pass road will be a blue gate (this shows as 8th Street on Google Maps though I don't know why). There will be an AVTR sign here too. Turn right onto this road.
  • The first driveway on the right is our cabin, about 75 yards up. See Google Maps at http://goo.gl/maps/rpxlK for exact turn at driveway.

Scenic way (less miles, but more time, ~7 hours):

  • From Denver Airport, follow signs to I-225. Go south on I-225 to I-25. Go north on I-25, 1.5 miles to Highway 285.
  • Go west on Highway 285 to Monte Vista and the Highway 160 intersection (about 225 miles). (Note: There is a grocery store about 1 mile east on 160 from this point if you need to pick up food.)
  • Go straight through intersection and the road magically turns into Highway 15. Go south on Highway 15 until pavement ends (about 15 miles). Follow directions above (**) from here.

Ma MArki, is there a bear (or some other animal) problem in the park? At your place?

There can be bears and mountain lions about, but usually not near inhabited areas. I have seen them on hikes, though I wouldn't call it a problem.   -M.

I am thinking that Monday might be the best day for a day trip to Valley View. I will need to know for sure who all will want to go, since I'll need to call in reservations by June 20th. Those wanting to go will need a towel, sunscreen, good walking shoes, a flashlight and a light jacket for the bat tour at dark (it gets chilly). Day fee is $15.

There will be other things going on back in camp that day too, so no one should feel pressured to go.

Hey guys,

it's been a while.

I am looking for a ride from Denver to the camping site and back to Estes Park for the main Meetup. I will of course compensate the driver for gas etc.

So if anyone has a free seat for me feel free to contact me.

Best Regards

Timon

On a side note :

I also have a room to share at the Hotel.

Another note that I forgot to bring up:  Your cell phones will not work once you get past a few miles up Forest Road 250.  I have a land line phone at the cabin if people need to make any emergency calls.   -M.

Ok folks,  I need a headcount for the OLT optional day trip. We have 2 vehicles lined up that can take about 5 more people.   Remember the dress code before committing, because there isn't anywhere else to go once at OLT (it's remote) if you change your mind after getting there.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT REGARDING THE CAMPING EVENT

We have decided to move the location of the camping trip slightly.

Instead of meeting at the Alamosa river campsite, we will be meeting at Mark's cabin. Mark lives on 5 acres of land, and has graciously offered to allow those people who are camping with tents to set up on his property.

What does this change in terms of logistics? Almost nothing, aside from making everything easier for us to coordinate and making it easier to keep the clan together, which is very important to us.

Final notice: Friday, June 26 is the last day to confirm for the OLT trip.

There is plenty of room to spread out. You may have to take a few extra minutes to move twigs or small rocks to make a smooth spot for your tent, but the advantage of having the home base within walking distance instead of driving distance will be invaluable.  Also, WiFi should reach most of the property so we won't have to rough it too much. ;)
The phone number to the cabin will be listed by my name (Toruk Makto) in the Roll Call area of AvatarMeet in case anyone gets lost on the way. Remember, cell phone coverage can be spotty in the mountains and stops working completely about 5 miles up Forest Road 250.

I'd like to reserve a spot for the OLT trip if I'm not already on the list.

Ekirä

Eltu and I are also planning on coming on the OLT trip. :)

Toruk Makto

We may need one more vehicle at this point for OLT, if anyone is willing.
