Wiya.... I feel like a beginner again... watching the Avatar Meet Na'vi lesson 103 right now and got confused... is pum really used in possessive constructions only?

Also, concerning the expression ätxäle si oe pivawm, which got me confused as well... was it shortened from ätxäle si oe tsnì pivawm? So tsnì just dropped?

Plumps

Don't worry ;) It just needs a bit of dusting and your Na'vi will be back the way it used to be ;)

No, not only. Judging from the use of example ...
Sawtute akawng holum, pum asìltsan 'ì'awn.

A reasonable assumption, but we've only ever seen it in its conversational politeness formula.

Hm, so it's not clear what the long version was... if there was any, but I think there was one, when Karyu Pawl created that phrase... ^^

Luckily I didn't forget that much, "just" some vocabulary, but that's nothing that can't be fixed :D

Coolness. I was afraid that this thread becomes forever alone, hrh. ;D

Abot the pum word:
pum is a word that refers to the same "type" of something mentioned.

Examples:
Tsayayo lu ean, slä fìpum lu tun.
That bird is blue, but this one is red.
(Both are the same type: a bird. But they are not the same bird.)

Kelku ngeyä lu tsawl; pum oeyä lu hì'i.
Your house is large; mine is small.
Eltu si! Your house is large; my-one = mine is small.

---

As for tsnì, I think, one can drop tsnì, but I replaced it by a comma. Oe ätxäle si, nga ziva'u fìtseng..

Here she comes to save the day, Eana Unil is on her way... :P :P :P
No thread has to be forever alone when I'm around, hrh.

Lu oeru lahea tìpawm... :3
How'd you say "starry/starlit sky" ("Sternenhimmel") nìNa'vi?  ??? Using utu for this is out of the question, kefyak? And ngip a sanhìkip doesn't suffice, at least for me... Well, ngip a sanhìkip means space, the dark, endless space between the stars and everything else up there, not what we see from our little planet 'Rrta or what we would see from Pandora...

Maybe sanhìtxayo? Santxayo? Tantxayo? We have hertxayo (herwì + txayo)...

In fact, pum has not to do with possession - it was old mistake coming from kelku ngeyä tu apxa, pum oeyä lu hì'i.
Pum is repeater of previously mentioned word, to avoid repeating. In English, one works this way (not number!): Your house is big, my one is small.
Oe lu skxawng skxakep. Slä oe nerume mi.

Not utu, for sure.
I'd try taw a teya (lu) fa sanhì. I'm not sure if *taw ateya fa sanhì would work, I'm afraid it wouldn't

Also I want to say that pum always means another instance of a thing. You could not use pum to say about the same thing, instead you should use fì'u or tsa'u (tsaw). So this example is incorrect: *kelku oeyä lu hì'i. pum lu spuwin kop. Instead we should use tsaw or fì'u. And therefore we could not use pum without attributes. So we can't say just pum, it should be fìpum, pum oeyä, pum amip etc. The sentence *pum lu sìltsan would not make any sense in any context.

I'd try taw a teya (lu) ta sanhì.

It's teya ta ;)

Are there any official examples of that? I know that teya could have complements with ta, but is it applicable to attributive form with -a-? For example as we know participles (verbs which work as adjectives) could not have complements (it's impossible to say *tute atswusayon fa ikran, it should be tute a tswayon fa ikran). I guess adjectives too :-\

Nope. I mentioned that pum refers to a same "type" but not the same thing (case for tsa- or fì'u), or as Kemaweyan wrote: another instance of a thing.
The old mistake that pum = possessive is the misintrepration of mine in the sentence, where pum appeared the first time, mine is a contraction of my+one.

But yeah, repetition is the mother of learning. ;)

How would you guys translate "how often?" ?  ???

Given the structure of the other interrogatives we first would have to need a word for "seldom" (it has once been proposed as *län or *lan) to combine it with pxìm to a noun to arrive at "how often? how seldom?" together with -pe+
*sigh* another word we miss and need :-\

Tìtstewan

I just see that *lan has been sent in january 2012. Maybe it could be worth reminding Pawl about that word? :-\
