well, i have one question too (for now):)

we know that the 'yes/no' question is formed by adding 'srak' to the end of the sentence, but what about questions in general?
for example, 'what colour is your hair?'.
does the na'vi language even possess such question forms? it could but we must wait for dr frommer to shed some light on the subject. or they do not use it at all (i doubt that). or maybe i am too lazy and stupid to check it out somewhere in the forums?:)

We don't have a word for "color" or "hair" yet, or even "head" (although we have "brain" - odd, that), but questions are typically marked by use of interrogatives: pe'u, pesu, peyfa, kempe, krrpe, lumpe, and tsengpe (what thing, who, how (way), how (action), what time, why, and what place).  Note the root "pe" in each word.  So for example, if you wanted to say "How do you do that?" in Na'vi, you would say

nga-l tsakem-ti peyfa si?
you-DAT that action-ACC how do?
How do you do that?

That said, if you just said "Nga peyfa si?" you would probably be perfectly intelligible.

Doolio

thanks a ton, that's exactly what i wanted to know:)
apparently, my laziness prevented me from even noticing na'vi interrogatives ;D

Just wondering,

Will you get a podcast? It would help a whole lot to go through the alphabet being able to hear it at the same time

I don't think anyone has posted a question like this

Then you can get to words, constructing sentences

for example:

In English we would say "I'm going to school."   "[noun] [verb] [subject]."
where Japanese would say "School going I."   "[subject] [verb] [noun]."  (that's how they construct there sentences)

i think this would make things simpler and easier.
I wish whats-his-face would post here

what people has been frequently asking is what the infix "iv" means, like in livu.
I people in this thread can help ourselves figure it out. lol

I dunno if it's even asked already, but I wanna ask about this: Ralu. it was written that it's a "child's name". So it is just a name, or does it mean anything? like does it mean the 'name of a child', or sth. why is it even there? there's someone from Pandora called Ralu? I dunno.

I added the answer of your question to the faq. However this hasn't been confirmed yet. It's only based on the speculations we made about the <iv> infix.

ahh right... but that information really clears the previous complicated answers up. But me myself dunno if that's right or wrong. I'll use that for now tho. :)

Hello,

Of course I am new in joining everyone in an attempt to learn an interesting language. I've done a little reading and looked things over a bit.  Being brand new where would you start, and what would be your first steps afterward.  I ask that, becuase I haven't tried to learn a new language in about 16 years, so if it's not english I just have no idea where to begin.

It depends on the ones who applauded or smited you. :) If you are giving useful informations or help, people are gonna applaud you if they want.

Hey this is mre of a site question, rather than one relating to the language, but I was looking for a translation of "thrown spear" [like a javelin] But could not find it, maybe after we have a more complete translation, there could be a quick translation doohickey, you know, type in a phrase or word and get instantanious translation. anyway, if any one has the translation, just contact me.

mO_Tan

"ti-" as a prefix...
"le-" as a prefix...?

can someone please give me a example of each?
"Guys, come on. Whats wrong with this picture? Wheres my cigerette?"

Here are some examples:

ngay = true
tìngay = truth

hrrap = danger
lehrrap = dangerous (would be)

i feel the need to point out that i have noticed a significant number of sentences that have incorrect ergative/accusative usage.

i find it symptomatic that people tend to use these in many 'noun is other noun' sentences, which is incorrect. in sentences like 'I am a father' (i be father) or 'john is a moron' (john be moron) (i am not using real examples, also, i am not translating it to na'vi because the context is obvious as it is), both nouns stay in nominative.

for ergative/accusative to be triggered, there must be a subject and an object, and subject must do something to the object directly (i eat soup; i killed michael etc).

i am sorry i don't remember where exactly i ran across these, but i had to point this out...

Does anyone know why the verb ''taron'' is pronounced like ''gad'on''? And where can I find a video about pronouncing ejectives?

Hi there! Just joined! uhh...

so a couple of questions...

first off... *ahem*

*raises hand*

What's IPA?  Huh  Is it the separation of the words into the hyphens and < / >? I would like to go ahead and ask what IPA stands for too.

Second, what is ŋ?

Also, it says "For PC, alt plus keycodes are used:     alt+141 = ì     alt+0252 = ü," but what about ä?

Next, I am just beginning, and I've downloaded and saved the Pocket guide, navi-alphabet, navi-compendium, linguistic terminology crash course, navi-vocabulary(sorted english), and it's quite a bit of information.

I know Na'vi is still a growing language, and I'm glad it is and I can get in on it so early, but it's still a little overwhelming. I just wanted to know the best way to start learning. I've read around a little, but I haven't really found a good place to start other than here. I feel like I'm drowning.  Cry

So, uhh, S.O.S.! and I'm really happy to be here!

Fpom-a-Orinblac

Does anyone know if there is a possibility or method for getting words outside the lexicon provided in the pocket guide? aka what if i need to say something that isn't in the lexicon?

mO_Tan

IPA = International Phonetic Alphabet

It's a system of phonetic notation, its a standered representation of the sounds of a spoken language (wikipedia it)
you can get the list here, http://www.learnnavi.org/navi-phonetics/ , it helped me so much  :)

and i started off by learning all of the infixes, sufixes and prefixes. but i kinda just jumped into the deep end to learn how to swim ;D but im doing fine now!
