Couple of questions
« on: August 28, 2010, 10:37:34 pm »
First off, one day I was bored in my pre-calculus class and on the top of the note page wrote:
Oel ve'kì tìftiati kifkeyä ayholpxay
But I'm pretty sure that construction is not correct, so how would I correct it and/or write it more elegantly?

Secondly, my first name is Patrick, and as such I'm trying to find a good way to transcribe it into Na'vi.
I've come up with two different ways, Pätsrìk and Pätrrìk, but I don't know if either of these are legal within the phonological rules of Na'vi.

Irayo in advance ;) .

ngal ve'ki fì'ut alu maths nì'ìnglìsì kefyak? tsakrr oel ngat ve'ki!  :P (only joking)

Frommer's translation of science (tìftia kifkeyä) only really works for natural sciences and arguably would exclude maths, what I'd say instead would be "tìftia ayholpxayä" (arguably a very simplistic description but, at the level it would be taught to the na'vi (arithmetic), accurate). Other than that it's all grammatically sound although as a personal preference I'm not a fan of SVO (English word order) in na'vi so I'd probably say "ve'ki tìftiat ayholpxayä oel".

As for your names, both are legal although I'd probably have just gone for Pätrìk (with an r not an rr), this keeps it as the two syllables it is in English (unlike Pätrrìk which is three) and keeps the sounds involved more similar to those in English (Pätsrìk would sound more like a name *Pasrick).

Math is alright, really, just sometimes very boring ;) . The only reason I didn't take the simplest route was because I didn't think the tr combination was acceptable, but if it is then I'll go with that.

Irayo for your help!

Pä.trik wouldn't be acceptable, but Pät.rik would be. Remember that consonants can close syllables as well as start them.
