Changing Name...Please Help
« on: October 27, 2011, 09:23:11 am »
Kaltxì ma oeyä aysmukan sì aysmuke (my brothers and sisters?)

So, I just joined yesterday and I'm thinking of changing my name cuz, honestly, I have no idea what my current name means (if it has meaning). It was just one of those names I got from a generator.

So, my desired name is "Restless" only in Na'vi. I've looked through every source that I know of and I can't find a translation for Restless, so I'm thinking of a translation for Without Rest. I looked through the dictionary and I came up with Luktsurokx; from luke- (without) and tsurokx (rest). I have no idea if this is correct or not; if its put together correctly, does gender need to be involved? etc...I have no idea

What do you guys think? Any input is appreciated.

Irayo in advance!
I am the sea on a moonless night
Calling, falling, slipping tides
I am the leaky dripping pipes
The endless aching drops of light

I am the raindrop falling down
Always longing for the deeper ground
I am the broken, breaking seas
Even my blood finds ways to bleed

Even the rivers ways to run
Even the rain to reach the sun
Even my thirsty streams
Even in my dreams

I AM RESTLESS!

Perhaps Ketsolurokx - not rested, although I'm not sure I have the <ol> infix in the right position.  There are many who know infixes better than I do.

I have no suggestions for actual words, but remember "translate the meaning, not the words"  In English, "restless" doesn't mean unrested or without rest, but more like "needing to move" or "not able to be still"

Irayo. I didn't even think about that. That would certainly get what I want across more clearly than "without rest" which someone might read as "tired" or "not rested". So, now I need to figure out how to translate "needing to move" or "not able to be still" (or something simialr) to Na'vi

Irayo smukan sì smuke  :)

'Always moving' would translate literally to frakrr 'erärìp which sound cool, but is a mouthful to pronounce (not that my Na'vi name isnt  ::) ). Notice the use of the <er> infix, which implies continuous action, and creates the same feel here as the -ing would on 'moving'. With names, you do not need to be as gramatically or syntactically accurate as you would with other writing because names are very personal (though if you can follow the rules, all the better). For instance, I deliberately chose not to use the short plural form in 'eylan ayfalulukanä (which is always speaker's option, anyway). However, I do use the short plural form as kind of a Na'vi nickname.

Have fun coming up with a name. It will (hopefully) be with you for a long time to come!

Irayo ma tsmukan. That is definitely a possibility that I will consider. I'm still really new at the Na'vi language. How would you pronounce that? I have an idea of how to, but it would prolly be butchered hrh  ;D

BTW I noticed you have the Na'vi Bible Project sig. I was reading through that and I thought it was so awesome that people were doing that, but it appears no one has posted anything for a while. The again I haven't read through the other topics. What's going on with all that?

Irayo again!

If you look at "restless" as "unquiet", you can translate it into Na'vi as kemawey. However this name can be easily confused with Kemaweyan (man with the highest number of posts here :))

I really like Kemaweye,  but I also like the "contractions" Kemaweve and Kemayite (Kemawey 'ite). :):):)

Please tell me how Kemaweve  and Kemaweye relate to the female principle?

Hmm.  Because the -e suffix is feminine and the -an is masculine?

Oh wow, I didn't think I'd come back to so many replies hrh. Irayo ma smukan sì smuke. I really like how Kemaweye sounds, but at the same time could people look at the translation as "Restless" or "unquiet" as in "someone who never shuts up" hrh  :) I definitely don't wanna be known as the latter  :D

How would you translate something along the lines of "My soul doesn't rest"? Thats what I'm going for. Not necessarily that I am literally restless, but rather my soul  is. Though I still like Kemaweye

Hmm.  Because the -e suffix is feminine and the -an is masculine?

Not always.. For example in the word atan it does not mean masculine. But if there could be the word without this suffix, then it means a gender. For example: tsmuk - sibling (without gender), tsmukan - brother, tsmuke - sister.
