You have Windows Vista?  You could try alt + 141 for ì and alt + 132 for ä.  That works for me.  Or you could just use the handy buttons.
Good luck ma Ney'ite Ateyo.

Try this. You can use it instead of English layout. Only difference between them are

ä = RAlt + a
ì = RAlt + i
Ä = RAlt + Shift + a (i.e. Shift + ä)
Ì = RAlt + Shift + i (i.e. Shift + ì)

without RAlt it works as normal US layout :)

I could always just copy/paste the ì when I need it :P

It's quite difficult if you write in Na'vi a lot...

very true. hopefully I will be getting my own laptop soon and I'll be able to do the keyboard change; by then I will probably be typing/using Na'vi a lot more so it may very well be perfect timing :]

Ekira, I do not know how to type with an accented i. could you tell me how? irayo in advance.
You can type "ä" and "ì" using buttons in toolbar above smiley icons when composing the new message. They are the rightmost two buttons - there is no simpler way of typing them :)

No, it should work in Windows Vista.
Alternatively you could change your keyboard layout to U.S. international, which has "ä" mapped to AltGr+q (and "Ä" to AltGr+Shift+q), and can produce "ì" by first entering the dead key to the left of 1, and then entering "i" ("Ì" by entering the dead key and then "I").

currently can't change my keyboard layout because I'm not the only one to use this computer. I'll be able to in a month or so when I get my own, however.

The thing with U.S. international is that it is exactly the same as the regular U.S. keyboard, only with a bunch of extra buttons hiding under AltGr. Chances are no one will even notice the change.

is it? could you, by any chance, tell me how to change the keyboard setting, then?

I'm afraid I'm not familiar with Vista, but I can give you directions for Windows 7. Hopefully the process is the same on Vista.

First go to the Control Panel, where you choose Region and Language. From there, go to the Keyboards and Languages tab and click Change keyboards.... You should see which keyboard you are currently using. Choose Add..., and scroll down to English (United States). There, simply check the United States-International check-box and click OK. You should now be able to switch between regular U.S. and U.S. international at will.

I'm afraid these codes work correctly with US keyboard layout only (at least they don't work with my Czech layout). But if everything goes wrong, you can use "charmap" utility (I hope it is still part of Windows Vista / 7) - select Start button, type charmap in search box and press Enter (maybe my description is not fully correct - I'm using XP). Then simply select and copy required char from the charmap table.

Nì'awtua Eyktan

Just wanted to point out that you need to hold the left 'alt' button and use the num keys on the right side of the keyboard (not the ones above the letter keys). Just learned this yesterday (since I'm using a swedish keyboard I got an 'ä' button and a '`' button, so I don't need to use the combinations) :P

Neyn'ite Te Tsahìk Txeptsyìp'ite

ma Nì'awtua, I don't have a second set of number keys. I'm on a laptop.
