Makto ko!

Hey I'm new to this entire idea of learning a seemingly inhuman language, and from the vocabulary references I have been looking at it is pretty intense, and looked quite interesting and challenging. I can't say my speciality is languages, but I have been able to near master a handful, such as English and French. Now, the thing is, English looks to French and it realises they look quite similar, whereas my English looks at Na'vi and just gives up comprehending all these fancy 'injections' or 'dative forms', as English isn't quite this complicated.

I have also found that looking at dictionaries and reference guides doesn't help me put the language together at all, and I don't know which words to learn because I have no idea which words are important, or necessary, for example, do I need to learn dative over future? Please can someone help me with simple phrases that I could learn, as well as some useful words and translations and maybe some help with all this language jargon and how I use the language well so I can then go off on my own and learn it some?

Cheers  ???

Project NgayNume works on TeamSpeak and if you join it you'll learn as you learned to speak your native language. You are in a class, with several students.
Neytiri Project works either by text wither by call - you and your teacher will choose whether to speak by text or voice. You have your own teacher, and no other student will be taught by your teacher.

I am more of a writer than a speaker and my style of learning is deeply based on how well I can write the language, as this is more important to me as a reader than anything else. I also find writing the first step to speaking, despite the obvious notation that this is the other way around in learning your native language.

Which of the projects would be best suited to my style of learning, do you think, both being Haryu at Project Neytiri?

1. English is far more complicated. It's just that you learnt it at such a young age that now it seems perfectly natural to you that the past tense of the verb "to be" isn't beed and that a letter doesn't let but a hunter hunts. Once you get used to Na'vi, you'll see that it's a lot simpler, so far we have no irregular verbs for example.

2. Project NgayNume certainly sounds like a good idea for you. The idea is that you learn by immersing yourself in the language instead of having to learn all the linguistic terminology and read the guides (although there are benefits to both ways). If you want to be able to use the guides, this document should help you get your head around the jargon and this booklet should give you plenty of things to practice with.

My biggest piece of advice is to write sentences, it doesn't matter if they're horrible, we'll tell you where you went wrong, why it's wrong and how to fix it, after all, you can't learn without making mistakes.

general summaries...

NgayNume is all about learning to speak AND read/write. this language has a beautiful sound that would be a shame to throw away. Ngaynume is all about NOT learning by direct translation and linguistic terminology. we learn to understand by pictures and examples. Association, correction, and immersion. several worldwide weekly classes with many students of the same level taught by an advanced member of the na'vi community  on Teamspeak 3, a free Voice over IP program. launch 3 starts 7 january. there is a podcast for class recordings, and lessons are in form of a prezi presentation.

Neytiri is all about a deep one-on-one learning experience between an advanced member of the na'vi community and a student. this learning is completely up to the pair how and when it is to happen. this is because people learn differently. there are teachers who value speaking and use skype, and there are those who dont care about speaking(:() and they just use texting, email, and IM to teach. its very flexible.

Sorry I am not sure what a Prezi presentation is, but it sounds to me that the Neytiri project would be more for me because, as well as learning to speak the language, I wish to be deeply involved with the site community, except I do not wish to or for some cannot access some forms of communication such as Skype. For me the idea of IM teaching would be more workable as well as flexible as I would be able to access this form of communication every night or almost every night.

Thankyou both for your information and help, I would also like to ask if it would be ok to add you or email you, Tirea, as I think I will pursue the Neytiri Project more, and it seems you are a haryu for this project so I would like to ask you more about it less on the forums.
