Makto ko!

Ma smuktu,

I have been attempting (I daresay ;)) to learn this language for some time, and have discovered that it aids leap and bounds to have the appropriate documents to hand at all times, such as a dictionary and a grammar references, as these I have not by heart and doubt to have such memory of them for some time. I have also found that these documents are written as the authors style suits them, which while working for many people, works ill with others ways of learning. As such, I would like to request help in organising 'personal documents' for me to start with, and maybe later public documents to help others who wish the same as me.

By personal documents I have many ideas as to what this could mean. For a start, while using the dictionary, I find that it is more useful to have words organised by subject and category than alphabetical sequence. This would allow quickly to look up words to use in place of what you are trying to say, i.e. if someone wanted the name of an animal native to Pandora for a sentence like 'I hunted _____' it would be easy to flick to that section and find an appropriate gap-filler.

Maybe for the grammar section, though my ideas as to this are limited, definitions of words are provided, or the dictionary could be aimed less for people who actually know what they are talking about when they say 'yes, I used the patientive for said reason', and more in easy to understand and simple talk, ie. the patientive is a tense (or something) that is put on the ends of words that are being affected by the actions you want to do in the sentence, and perhaps an example, numeral of which come to mind. I think this would be a good idea because it is easy to understand for people new to the language (as I know I struggled with the concept) and also good for revision or to quickly check if you were right to use said tense (or whatever a patientive is categorized as).

Please help if you can, I haven't yet begun creating said document but at the moment it would have to be based on my own suggestions and on my knowledge (which as you may find is very limited) and the knowledge of existing documents, but I may need corrections, suggestions and general help to make the finished document I plan, please comment for suggestions, and any help in any form will be more than welcome.

Irayo,

sure. this sounds good. as for the custom dictionary, we have one catagorized by part of speech. but maybe you can get Taronyu to arrange one for catagory of conversation, as you have mentioned.

as for a NiaN for dummies....

well its not ALL THAT crazy to learn the terminology. perhaps i will make up a quick PDF on

"Linguistic Terms needed for learning na'vi, for nonlinguist beginners."

I'll even do that Right now and see if i can get it linked to the site.

with that, you will just know what everyone is talking about and the current learning materials and EVERYthing doesnt have to be rewritten. lets not re-invent the wheel, as they say ;D

Makto ko!

I understand and am very grateful for your help, ma Tirea!
Also I thought your video lessons may come into this for NiaN for dummies as I believe you were doing a chapter-by-chapter explanation of this kind? Please correct me if I am wrong but if you aren't I think it might be a good idea!!

Well that's the plan. I was gonna start with chapters 5 and 8 cuz those are apparently the hardest to swallow for people. Eventually I hope to have a NiaN vid series of sorts.

But of course you know of my coming hiatus (see link in my signature)

Ill do what I can for the community before January 26. ;D

'Oma Tirea

I have come to realize that NiaN is basically Horen leNa'vi for aysngä'iyu :P

yeah. but even still it seems complicated for some.

Makto ko!

Ma Tirea yes I have read all about your temporary leave and am, as the rest of the community, deeply sad as now who is going to correct and help me? ;D

But yes I have read and understood the entire of NiaN with some effort and would aid you with some of the more simply chapter videos if I only had some time and a recorder  :(

As you are, ma Tirea, I am also struggling to balance school work (lots of it :() with my freetime and this forum, and, I regret to say, school work is winning at this moment and so my time to participate in this creation of resources will be limited but I will be more than happy to help or offer any suggestions, just ask or message me ;D!

Also if I knew how to make these PDF's that everyone uses to display their works to the community, I might myself begin to write (with help) this categorized dictionary (I need to find out which words are most commonly used though, as it will not be concise) or a NiaN for dummies that covers only basic aspect of Na'vi that they desperately need to know to get started (tenses, cases, possession and perhaps gender and infixes for amounts, i.e. ay-?)!

If anyone knows how to make PDF's it would be a good help, but at the moment I will write it into a Word document...

Press the "export to PDF" button on the Word tool-bar. You could also use LaTeX, which would result in smaller, neater and better documents, but the language has a pretty steep learning curve.
We learn from our mistakes only if we are made aware of them.
If I make a mistake, please bring it to my attention for karma.

And that is why I created a "Na'vi for beginners": http://forum.learnnavi.org/learning-resources/navi-for-beginners/.

Ah, very good ma MIPP, this leaves out the dilution of this document as it is already available!
Good work, MIPP, do you mind if I advertise this work to make it as publicly available and recommended as NiaN?
I wish to do this as beginners aren't very often directed to this work as much as they are to NiaN, and having read it I believe if I had used this as a pre-NiaN guide, it would have helped immensely!

I could translate it into French :D And if no one else proposes himself to do it, I could also translate the document into German (although there will inevitably be some mistakes since it's not my mother tongue).
