pronunciation of the r in words like Srak.
« on: March 02, 2017, 09:48:49 am »
I know that the consonant r is pronounced like either tt, t or dd so for the words srak or any word with the r would it be pronounced like stak?   It was confusing me a little bit.  How can you tell when to use either of the three pronunciations of this consonant?

I'd say it's just an extremely short rr, but just like 1x r. It's the same sound, just not trilled... if that helps lol ;D Kinda similar to how Japanese people pronounce their r-sounds imho.
It's not English or German r, it's not an l or t sound, not even d. You just form this kinda r with the tip of your tongue touching the roof of your mouth lightly, without trilling it. o.-

If you know Spanish, it’s the r in torero … one flapped r sound. Some people have difficulties with that. I don’t think it’s that big of a deal. It’s as if you want to cope with RP English. Everybody does it a little bit different. As long as you are understood—and you’re not a perfectionist—, everything is fine ;)

Yeah, Na’vi in a Nutshell needs rework desperately
;DI’m working on it

Nutshell was written by American for Americans, apparently. In general, we are the only people I know who would pronounce words like bottle, puddle, etc. With a flap r sound and not a well pronounced t or d sound as written.

r is alveolar flap/tap;
rr is alveolar trill

Na'vi language has no dental sounds. Tho it that's as close as you can get and it's understandable, I suppose it'll suffice. :)
