Hello and Happy Avatar day!

So here's the deal - I'm going through the Na'vi dialogue from the extended edition, and I see a suffix that I'm not understanding.

Moat said this, in the deleted scene of Jake's first meal at hometree: Peyä menarisì nìhawng lu hì'i His eyes are too small.

I'd have understood if she'd said Peyä menariti nìhawng lu hì'i. So, what am I missing here? I'll be happy if someone can call me an idiot and show me why  8)

I'm thinking it's "and his eyes are too small".  The on the end of menari is referring to her previous statement ("he seems dim to me").  Although I thought if you are connecting phrases, you should use ulte instead of ?    ???

And of course I could be completely wrong....not unusual.  :)

That part is correct, which is why menarisì doesn't make sense to me, but I heard it pretty clearly (okay, it could've been menarisi, but that makes even less sense).

I'm mostly posting so I'll be notified in case someone has a good theory :P

I made the same observation when that scene was released a few weeks back, I clearly hear "menarisì" there.  It's possible the line of dialog was longer and something is now missing.  (Think how "oeri ta peyä fahew akewong (teya ontu längu)" was shortened.)

hmm... so, one might say that line is not a canonical example of Na'vi grammar?

CC is credited with creating the word «snumìna», so it could be that the scene was filmed a some time that K. Pawl was not around and "who knows"...?! I certainly don't, but it could simply be a mistake. She could have just mispronounced it. Her rendering of «Fkol pole'un fì'ut!» and some of her other dialogue was not perfect either.

That said, I love her to death as Mo'at and feel that the casting was perfect!!

Yeah, I just noticed the other day when I was looking at the dictionary that snumina had a "CP" next to it. Who knew? I also found it interesting that Laz Alonso came up with the most words of any of the cast, from what I've seen.

I agree that Moat was perfectly cast, and in fact I can't think of anyone in Avatar that wasn't well cast.

Most of the "words" attributed to Laz Alonso are more just sounds; he was very expressive with Na'vi sounds which weren't actually words.

You're referring to "oiss" and "saa" - but he also came up with "latsi" (ready). I don't remember the rest off hand.

Right, but one is a word, the rest are battle cries, grunts, and other non-word sounds.
