Using a Mac keyboard

No, you don't have to.
Either you change your language specifics for your keyboard to a language that has the 'special' characters (e.g. German for the ä)

Otherwise you use the normal combinations for special characters:
alt and u + a = ä
alt and `+ i = ì (don't know what the `-key is, beside the z)
and ' for ' ;) - sometimes that changes to a , at the beginning of a word in Word (I don't know how it is with Pages) but just type a letter before that, set the ' and delete the letter again...)

That's all the special characters I could think of...

*sigh* The option codes were so much easier to use than the windows alt codes...
