Eltu si! Srak! Srak!
(Listen/pay attention! -- Yes! Yes!)

I don't want to be the boring guy, but srak is a particle to mark a yes/no question.  ;)

for "yes", use "Srane! Srane!" :D

Aha! I am free to make mistakes here, as people will correct me!

Srane! Set Oe tse'a! Txan iryao!

(um . . . hopefully that means Yes! Now I see! (in a physical sense) Much Thanks!

:'( Please don't hit me!  ;D ;D ;D
2022 update: Working on the new astrology book. "How to read tarot" books are on Amazon, if you are into that sort of thing.
Okay, so the old podcast is here: https://www.podomatic.com/podcasts/radioavatar It was goofy fun that ended too soon, but we had creative people. I hope we can get a new gang together (interested? PM me, let's make some magic!)
(Very old, outdated) Na'vi FUN activity book is here: But what are you doing? Let me know! :)

Now why would people hit you??

This is a supportive community..... i hope... :P

Anyway, the only reason we won't have heard from Frommer is due to copyright licensing. as the language is technically an asset of the film, it is in Fox's hands, not Dr. Frommer's. Shame, but i'd imagine we'll get a learners guide soon, or something to that effect.

ma dustywhite, am I right in thinking you'd like an audio clip about pronounciation because I've just uploaded one on talknavi (here), I hope it's helpful.

Also, tslam might be better than tse'a. You're translating an English idiom, it's difficult to spot them but if you don't it won't mean what you want it to.

I thought olo'matekaya sounded quite feasible as well :)

it could even be olo'mate(an)kaya so that we have the blue in there in which case kaya could mean flute and the name fully translates as "clan at blue flute" although that would need it to be olo'mateanakaya but it is still plausible.

Personally i don`t take the Na`vi as alien because i think i understand them.

When I look on the news and see what horrible things are happening around the world I can`t help but wonder what is the source of them and therefore my own race is becoming more and more alien to me as time passes by.

Does that make any sense?

I've created an "Open Questions" page on the Learn Na'vi wiki based on wm.annis' post at the start of this thread.

The wiki appears to be down at this time.  Hopefully it will come back up soon, and hopefully all the stuff we've put there will still be there.  But only Seabass knows for sure. :)

Wiki has been MIA since the server switch, Seabass is currently working it out. Don't worry, nothing has been lost, just misplaced.

Prrton

I saw two things on the list that we didn't know, but as of recently we now do.

1) Trials are formed with the sibling to me+ (for 2), which is the prefix pxe+, which like me+ and ay+ cause lenition. So:

    mefa'li = 2 direhorses
    pxefa'li = 3 direhorses

The trial pronouns also begin with px-.

As a side note, nouns formed via the nominalizing prefix tì- are also subject to lenition. So "3 noble truths" might be rendered as:

      pxesìngay anawm

2) The honorific/deferential verb infix <uy> is tertiary/class 3 so it comes after any others within the verb and in a multi-syllable verb with no other infixes, it comes in the final position. (e.g.: taron >>> tar<uy>on). In that respect, it is a sibling to <ei> (happy about it) & <äng> (not happy about it) and it cannot coexist or "stack" with either. You must choose which emotion you want to express:

    <ei> pleasure/satisfaction
    <äng> displeasure/dissatisfaction
    <uy> deference/humility/formality

It is always optional and once you have used it to set a tone, you can "step away" in your address or conversation and then optionally come back to it at another point or at the end if you feel the extra emphasis is needed.

This information comes to me from Paul Frommer, Otherwise I would not state it so factually. I always think it's a good idea to explain when we're conjecturing or being "creative" with examples that we clarify that. If you see me NOT doing so, please bring it to my attention and the attention of everyone else.

I think this list of things that "we don't know" is a great idea, and that it will also be encouraging to see those things move either gradually, one by one, or en masse to another column. I'm not one who would be opposed to three columns. (1) Unknown (2) Unattested (3) Incontrovertible.

I can't find a PDF I printed out (and then lost the e-copy of when my computer died at the beginning of January). It has a Lexicon I wish I had in a form other than print.

I don't know what the file is called but it has a ToC and deals with Phonology & Orthography, Vowels, Consonants, Grammar, and looks to be professionally produced. 32 pages (my print version) and colored. It also has cool formatted page numbers at the bottom of the page.

Please help me locate this file, and its proper name and author (so I can thank them :) )

That would happen to be the Learn Na'vi Pocket Guide, if I am not mistaken. You can get it here: http://www.learnnavi.org/docs/Learn-Navi-Pocket-Guide.pdf

It doesn't so much have an author as a compiler. You have to thank Karyu Amawey for that :P

Hope that was the right document :)
