I've been lurking around here for about a month and a half, soaking up various scraps of Na'vi...but that's about it. Any vague attempt I make at actually learning it (i.e. trying to translate stuff, doing worksheets, etc) turns up fruitless and I end up being stuck where I was before. I've never really been one to be able to actually 'learn' a language in the traditional sense, and was wondering if any of you lot had any ideas which might turn up trumps? Particularly on the grammar side of things, I still can't make heads or tails of the basics there.

Well, it seems to me there are two types of people when it comes to learning (a language). One type prefers a concise list of rules that they can pour over and compare to lists of samples and what not (book learners basically). The other type (you) learns better when given active participation and samples and infers rules from those (learn by doing).

So, that said, I'd suggest going onto IRC with us and try writing something in Na'vi. We'll probably pull it apart and find a bunch of things wrong but I bet that what we tell you from that will stick and you'll remember them. You can also do the same thing with the forums but since it will be less interactive it probably won't be as useful.

Other than that, have you looked at the Na'vi in a Nutshell guide? Really well written, concise but still accessible to any beginner who has never studied linguistics.

Slight problem with that: No mic (for the time being)

As for the nutshell guide, I haven't seen that yet. I'll go have a looksy.

IRC is a text chat, similar to AIM or Yahoo chat.

Teamspeak (and skype) is what we use for voice chat.

Ah...gotcha. Mebbe once I have some more time, got coursework I'm supposed to be doing.
