« on: May 27, 2013, 06:49:39 am »
Anyone read anything from George R.R. Martin's A Song Of Ice And Fire

I'm currently on the first book (most known) A Game Of Thrones and wow is it a good book, not long started but it hooks you instantly

Anyone else reading?

Oh yes!

I'm a huge fan of the books (and the tv-series). I'd even say that the third book, A Storm of Swords, is the best book I've ever read. They only get better and better, and it's fascinating how GRRM writes these extremely complicated, and most important: human, characters in a way the fantasy genre has never seen before!

You are in for a real treat my friend, these books are brilliant.

I've read all released books of that serie. Really, great work, but..... too many positive characters are killed. That makes these book hard to read.
I'm always saying, that good book is that one you can read again when you finish it. This serie is good too, but I can read it only once....

On the other hand, now I'm reading other books written by GRRM and I like them all

I watched the TV series first and swore I would NEVER read the books because I liked the show so much and didn't want the books to make me think less of it. Then I realized I have to wait nearly a year for more GoT and caved in. I got the entire series in hardcover for my birthday (Best B-Day present ever? Best B-Day present ever.) and am half way through the 1st book. As usual the book is definitely better but it doesn't take away from how awesome the TV series is which makes me very happy :D

If the series can maintain this extreme high quality through all 7 books it'll easily be my favorite series ever much in the way that Avatar is easily my favorite movie. (how many more run-on sentences can I cram into one post?)

I'm currently reading it, I'm at the half of the third book of the german version (every english book is 2 books in german because of translation), which means 1/4 of the second english book.

Watched the TV series before I started to read the books, and now I'm watching the series again while reading, so I can compare both with each other. ^^

Awesome vid. There are definitely spoilers in there (arguably some fairly sizable ones too) but you REALLY have to look closely and dissect things to see them. Nothing blatantly obvious.

(This post replying to the reading list thread, since it was wandering off-topic.)

Book/Season 3 spoilers ahead:
I haven't read that part yet but when I got there in the TV series

Speaking of Jon, in the books, the chapter immediately after the Tullys' wedding is from Jon's POV. He has a line that's equally or more tearjerking than the thing that came before it.

I was absolutely devestated in a way I've never been in any other TV series/Movie. Not even the falling of Kelutral effected me as much. For a week or two I though I may have completely lost interest in the series. I've never seen ANY story kill off so many good guys so quickly and unexpectedly.
Really, as I was writing in another thread, situation changes very quickly in the book, and only good characters are killed. However, if you start to read this serie, it is not possible to stop (IMHO). You want to know how story will continue. After 5th book, I think all really good characters are dead so, I'm very curious, how GRRM wants to continue in the story. When new volume will available, I definitely will read it too. But I'm in doubts that I would want to read all the serie again.

Don't remind me of the blood wedding, just watched the end of season 1 again and again had to cry while Ned was beheaded... No I don't want to continue reading (again), because I know what awaits me  :'( ...

And I agree with you, ma BlueElf, I guess I won't possibly read all the books again after I'm done with them, because of all the pain you have to go through while reading them... On the other hand... A Song of Ice and Fire is just too damn epic. Goddamn, I don't know, guess I just read all the books and then we'll see if I'll ever read them again in the future. But I'm pretty sure I'll watch the series over and over again, when it's completed, but even there... the pain... aaaah... GRRM, I hate you, lol.

But speaking of "all good characters are dead/will die", well... imo there are no truely good OR evil characters, everyone is a bit evil and good... I mean, just look at Jaime Lannister while the time he's in company with Lady Brienne of Tarth.

Speaking of Jon Snow knowing nothing and speaking of spoilers, I really, really hope that this
becomes true in the next books. Would be so damn cool imho, and would give back some hope and make good (at least a bit) for all the good guys being dead/killed off.

That's why I think it's better to read book first. On the paper you suffer less - and you can stop anytime and even skip some pages :)

Well, I can agree. At first moment I didn't like Tyrion Lanister, for example, but later it appears more like positive character. That's also why I'm curious for next volumes.

Anyway, it would be very interesting to know GRRM's mental processes while he's writing this big story. I'm interested in how many steps he thinks ahead, if he even knows how it all will end, if he leaves somebody to die just because of sudden idea etc.
For example Terry Pratchett has his Discworld plotted even books ahead - there are are volumes where he references previous parts, but also parts not yet created!

Now I have to wait like everyone else until The Winds Of Winter (vol. 6) is released. Keftxo, keftxo nì'aw, hrh... .. .   :(

I didn't even know about this thread!

I just got my copy of DWD. I was hoping for a nice long train ride to/from Chicago next month to read it, but that isn't happening now. There is another opportuniaty in March for the same trip-- and one to Seattle this summer (If AvatarMeet is there)!

I'm not active on Westeros, but you can find me over on Dothraki.org most any time.

Kaltxì ma frapo!
Oel kameie ayngati! Excuse me, but is it in these books and films they speak Doutraki?? Is there anyone in here that tried to learn it? Is it harder/easier than Na'vi? Yes, Na'vi is a little tricky, but at least I have heard it and that helps a lot. and it's also quite logic to me. But, I haven't heard the Doutraki (yet). And yes, I've heard both Quenya/elvish (Elen sila lúmenn' omentielvo (A star is lit up when we meet.) A little more than Oel kame ngati/I see you) and Klingon, but there I don't have any example.. Have fun while reading it, it's a really great book, especially some sort of relief and new excitement after aFfC, hehe. (All the Cersei chapters have nearly driven me crazy hrh)
So... you're learning Dothraki, then?

Exactly, it's the book where some of the introduced characters speak Dothraki, although you hardly read any Dothraki, High Valyrian, Astapori Valyrian (a mix of High Valyrian with other languages from Essos), Braavosi, Old Ghiscari or the Old Language (other conlangs from aSoIaF/GoT) words (no dialogues, those are only inside the TV show - inside the books you can find only some phrases like "valar morghūlis" and "valar dohearis" [High Valyrian] and some words like "arakh", "maegi" [Dothraki], "mhysa" [Old Ghiscari]).
I'm not learning Dothraki, so I can't answer your questions.
I've thought of learning High Valyrian, but it seems very hard/tough to learn, compared to Na'vi and Dothraki, especially since there's yet so less learning material for it around the internet. Dothraki offers more (right now, but it hopefully won't stay this way forever, heh).
