I never thought I'd like anything to do with Tarzan. It just struck me as too old and I associated it with comics which I had no interest in. But my parents enforced a "reading hour" rule (had to read for at least an hour a day) when I was younger and I'm glad they did or I may have missed this gem of a series.

It follows the story of an infant who's parents die. An ape who's just lost it's own child happens across him and raises him as her own. The pacing in this short book is perfect. Reading about how Tarzan is raised and how he develops and deals with being the only pink and hairless ape is very interesting. Adult Tarzan is also very well written. This book isn't all about action. Though there certainly is some, it's very much character driven.

Books one and two in the series are by far the best, but three, four, and maybe even five hold up well. After that, there's only so much you can do with the theme before it gets repetitive. None the less, even when I stopped at book 14, Tarzan himself remains as interesting as ever, even if the situations he finds himself in aren't.
