The Boy in Striped Pyjamas. I read it in Year 8 for English. The book is far better.

Lord of the Rings books and movies.

For years I refused to watch the movies. I have read the books to bits and the world in them was so perfect inside my head that I did not want to shatter that by someone else's interpretation. A friend then showed me a book of the Making Of, and the pictures in there were so good and equal to my interpretation that I did watch them.

May I quote: The book is far better. (Books in this case, even when the movies are done very well.)

Seconded.  I literally lived within the world of Middle Earth from age 11 until about 14 or 15, reading the books back to back over and over and over again, when I got to the end immediately starting at the beginning again because I didn't want to leave.  I did go to the movies right away, but only because I knew Legolas looked very much as I had imagined him.

Legolas kicked ass. I remember when the trailers first aired, I hadn't read the books yet (I had read The Hobbit). I started reading The Fellowship of the Ring but it's a totally different style than The Hobbit, so I read it rather slowly. I loved it, but I wasn't hooked until maybe halfway through. Then on the very day the movie came out, I decided I HAD to finish it before we went later that night, so I crammed 200-250 pages in before we left. I only failed to finish the last chapter.

I absolutely love the movies, but as is almost always the case, the books are better. Does anybody want them to maybe make a movie out of the battle for the shire? I was PISSED when
.

The best book to film transition is definitely "Holes". They very nearly followed the book word for word.

I can name some books which were turned into a film and all of them are quite bad in comparison to the books but I defenitely wanted to see them :P...
To start off with Harry Potter, I see the world of the books and the world of the movies as being two entire diffrent things.
Then Eragon, well, let's say they messed some things up.
Not to forget Saga of Darren Shan, I really hated that movie, it destroyed for me some great work of Shan. One of the worst things they've done is change the sex of a character... You don't do that, do you? Ayskxawng.'

Ok, enough bad movies, now some good ones:
Pietje Bell (Dutch), expecially part 1, it contains simply the entire feeling you get when reading the book.
Erik of het klein insectenboek (Dutch - Erik of the little book on insects), although the book is kinda old, the modern (and a bit childish) movie clearly retells the story without many adaptions.
De Schippers van de Kameleon (Dutch - Skippers of the Chameleon (name of their boat)), again a Dutch one, this one is hard to judge because there was not one individual book they turned into a movie but quite a few. I think the makers did a good job, the personalities of the main characters (the twin brothers) came up quite good.

There may be more...

I definately agree with you! In terms of following the orginal source material, it is definately the best. I think it's because the author, Louis Sachar, helped co-write the screenplay. Even though Shia Lebeouf (sp?) did not match the characters physical description, he did a wonderful job as the lead. Really great acting all around, especially from Sigourney Weaver as the warden.

I agree, most of the time the books are better than the movies, but you sometimes have to take them as two separate entities, like the Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings films. Sometimes there needs to be changes in order to make a movie adaptation work. What works for literature may not always work for a film. Some movie franchises are not like the books but stand as their own franchise well. Another great example is the Miyazaki film Howl's Moving Castle, which was vastly different from the book but still an awesome movie. I Am Legend is this too, though I liked the movie much better than the book (the only time this has happened to me).

In my opinion, the worst book to movie adaptation was Eragon. The casting was okay, but they messed up the dwarf city (no dwarves...?) and Saphira (sp?) pretty badly. Why did she name herself? Why did she grow up when lightning struck her? Why did the girl act a love interest to Eragon? I feel like they could have done a much better job...

May the odds be ever in your favor.

But some of the things they changed in Harry Potter were either COMPLETELY pointless or effected scenes from future books negatively. Take this scene for an example:
. Also, they like to change who says some of the lines. Why? Why can't the proper character speak the line? And why was Hagrid almost completely phased out?

I'm sorry, lol. The Harry Potter movies always get me going because for some reason I always think "Hey! They just HAVE to accidentally get this one right, don't they? DON'T THEY?" My family and I were SO excited for the first movie, we arrived four hours early to our theaters first showing (only to be BARELY first in line). I was SO let down. To be fair, the 7th movie was excellent despite many unnecessary changes. I haven't watched it a second time, but it actually may crack my top 25.

You're completely right, I didn't want to go into details because they made so many mistakes we would have to make a complete forum to post al the mistakes... SIGH
Ok, one then:

ABut well, I think part 7 is so far the best one, then 1 and 6 defenitely on the bottom of the list. Man, I was really angry when I saw that movie.

LOTR: Pretty good overall, some major niggles but generally a good effort.

Dune: Curate's egg of a film. Plot compressed & simplified. Subtleties lost. Some nice aesthetic choices.

H2G2: Appalling. They took all the best jokes out.   >:(
Please tell me if you see mistakes in a Na'vi post of mine. It's the only way I'll learn. :P

The Crucible

Brave New World, well I'm not sure it was made into a movie but Gatica cam close and they're both a terrible book and movie. I see the point Huxley was putting across but it was just boring. (my opinion)

Human No More

Eragon was NOT made into a film. Ever. Do not mention that thing :P.

The Hitchhiker's guide To The Galaxy was quite bad, primarily due to not really having any resemblance to the books. LOTR is the only series I can think of which was done well, Harry Potter almost so but not as much (too many changes and things left out, really).

Well the movie for it was based on the BBC Series which was based on the book.

I agree, it is very well done. :) I don't really remember the similarities and differences between the film and novel, but as far as the overall quality of the film goes, it is definitely satisfying! Also, the characters are great. :D

I definitely get what you mean! I was incredibly disappointed with parts 4-5-6. The three first are okay to me, because they are simply magical and I see them as classics - and also, the changes made compared to the books are not exaggerated and very bad. However, the more it goes on, the more there are horrible changes, horrible scenery and the whole thing just sinks. >< I agree, though: part 7 is definitely a good catch-up! I found it very good. :) They really managed to explain a pretty complex and complicated story in a comprehensible and accessible way and in a short amount of time, which is pretty much an exploit in my opinion!

Oh my god.. YES. 0_0

The fact that I hadn't read the books before watching the movies has one advantage: that, for many years (before actually reading the books), I wasn't bothered about any major changes having been made to the movies since I didn't even know what the real story was. xD But now that I have read several works from Tolkien, including the trilogy, it really bugs me. Since the movies are classics to me since 10 years, though, I can't be disgusted by them no matter how unfaithful to the the novels they are at times. ;P I also must say that PJ did a very, very good job overall, so I don't think there's reason to complain too much. :D

Two other big changes that drive me crazy are the treatment given to the perfect Faramir of the books (how can a totally virtuous character be turned into a selfish and not understanding man who nearly makes the whole quest fall down into pieces?), as well as what happens between Frodo and Sam when they are about to enter the Pass of Cirith Ungol. How unfair is that for poor faithful Frodo who would never have done such a thing!
