WHAT?! The chronicles of Narnia are brilliant! How can someone hate them? They're beautifully written and are candy for one's imagination. Is it because they're an allegory to Christianity?

Fantasy isn't really my thing, but the Narnia books are very well-written and easy to understand, without being childish. C.S. Lewis has great style.

Yes.  Furthermore, C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien were good friends and respected each other, although each thought the other's writing style was too/not enough open minded.  And they seem happy together in my bookcase.

I disliked Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials : Northern Lights because after about 200 pages, I still had the feeling nothing was happening at all, and I got the feeling I was waisting my time. :) I know this trilogy is supposed to be very good and that I perhaps should have continued, but I just couldn't. ;)

You HAVE to finish it! I really don't like his writing style but his story is incredibly well crafted from start to finish. The best part is that unlike most fantasy, his stuff actually seems like it could be possible. There's just so much depth it's overwhelming. I'm currently finishing up my second read through of the entire trilogy.

Have you made it to (minor spoilers only)

I really don't remember, I must have read it some years ago. :) But hm, I guess that just as I thought, I've been wrong to stop reading and giving in to my boredom at the very beginning. ;P Since I have no book to read for the moment, I think I'm gonna take the first volume back from my shell and give it a second try - you convinced me. ;)

His Dark Materials is a great series... You're not the first person I know of who got put off by Northern Lights going too slowly though :( - The Subtle Knife is a lot better in that respect, although if you liked Narnia then you may not like His Dark Materials as in terms of attitudes to mythology, they are essentially opposites :P

Yes, they are polar opposites. I like it that way though. I can appreciate stories from both sides of the mythology spectrum which means I've got that many more books I can read :).

I don't think you'll regret picking it up again. I almost felt like giving up on The Fellowship of the Ring. It's really a good thing I'd read The Hobbit first. Though the styles are different, I may have given up if I didn't know Tolkien had what it takes to write a good book.

I almost felt like giving up on The Fellowship of the Ring.

That happened to me 10 years ago as well.. except that I did gave up on it. Boy, how I regret it now! I wish I would have been a bit more perseverant at the time. :(

My goal was to finish it by the time the movies came out. On the first day the movie released, I read over 200 pages just so I could meet my goal :)

Wow, that's a lot of pages! ;P At least you have already read The Hobbit, so you won't need to do something like that next year when the first movie comes out. hrh :D

Stoneheart by Charlie Fletcher. Uh, I hate it so much. It's boring, uninterissting, blah blah blah. I was a few... ok... more... years younger, when I read this... book. I can't forget how bad it was.  xD

Franz Kafka, except from "the metamophosis", he's very boring and dull!
