well, various applications, WoW, various explorer windows, Zune player, Notepad, photo editing software, browser with about 4-5 tabs open, I don't like usually more than 5 to be open, personal preference.
How can having WoW open be any less distracting than 60+ tabs?
(BTW. Nice to see someone else who has a Zune! which? I own a black 1st gen 30GB model)

I own 2 Zune 120s, my black one's outer screen busted, I chipped it out, still works, bought a new one, made a case for it outta of a mtg card box, lined the box in elkskin, still trying to find a nearly scratch proof surface, like maybe clear polycarbonate.  I want this thing to be in a rather tough case, so dropping isnt an issue.

I don't see what the big problem is. MSN takes up more space on mine.

Niwantaw

I have 4 tabs open... and two of them is because I can never be bothered to close them off...
Only mostly AWOL.

guest2859

4 tabs is my max. Usually I only have 2 open.

Kemaweyan

Sometimes I have many tabs (up to 10) in browser when I'm working.. But usually 2-3, not more...

I have 11 tabs open at the moment although I peak at ~20 tabs. Open up the forum in one, open the boards I read in their own tab then go through each board, open topics with new posts in new tabs, read all of those and repeat for the next board.

Here's a great way to increase Firefox's speed:
1) Remove Firefox
2) Install Chrome

Fixed for you. :P

I installed Chrome, & Opera & Safari ... I always end up back with Firefox! The only browser I'm not fond of though is IE which is a bit odd since I'm by & large pro-MS.

I think that Microsoft should just hire some people who knows what they are doing, and Develop IE 10 fram scratch. It is not good when I get suprised over IE renderes my page correct when I'm about to start fixing all rendering errors (IE7 or earlier still renderers it so wrong it can though)

On the tab error, well, I tend to leave alot of tabs open, and also quite a bot of applications, which sometimes causes problems when I have Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, Vistual Studio and Chrome with alot of tabs open and then try to play a game.... :(

Using 3 tabs here, one being youtube, using only 125 MB here.

When I used firefox, it would start out low memory useage, but after about 3 hours of web surfing (mainly ont he forums here), I would be using about 2 to 3 gigs of my ram.

I don't use Firefox any more, now I use Chrome.

I have 3gb ram. not lagging for me but sometimes using Opera

Hikyuuri

I have 8 gigs, so it wasn't really a problem for me either, it just didn't make sense why it was pulling almost half my ram to run Firefox.

Ever since I started using Chrome, all my ram issues have gone away.

I have found the reverse with large numbers of tabs. (See near the start of this thread for the details)
Which versions of Firefox and Chrome were they?

If you think firefox uses lots of memory, just wait until you try opening the usual 100 tabs in chrome.
I used to manage around 100 tabs in firefox at around 0.5GB of RAM.
50 tabs in chromium takes just under 2GB!

I don't open that many tabs at once.  My screen isn't large enough to display them all.  You wouldn't be able to tell which tab you are selecting until you select one.

My responce to that is instead of opening everything in a new tab, close out of ones that you don't need right now, and reopen them later.  So long as you have a decent speed connection (and who doesn't these days) it would take no time to reopen any closed tabs.  Also, for those sites you go to a lot, there are things called bookmarks.  Try using those.

I don't mean to sound rude or mean in any way here, but what you are saying doesn't make any sense.  Your .5GB in firefox with 100 tabs open, I really can't believe that is a true statement.  If people are complaining about Firefox using over 1 GB with a more manageable number of tabs open, and when I say manageable, I mean under 10, I would expect 100 to take around 10GB.  Its not like the more you open, the less it takes.  Computer programs don't work like that.

Ma Hikyuuri, Hawnuyu na'viyä is a lost cause when it comes to persuading him to use bookmarks, I've been trying IRL for about a year now with no success.

As for the memory usage, you're not comparing like with like, Tompa'ivong is using windows (although surprisingly given that there's a problem, not Vista) whereas Hawnuyu is using Linux. Likewise they could both have very different pages open in those tabs, hawnuyu's could be almost all text whilst Tompa'ivong's tabs are streaming HD video and lastly they could have different add-ons running that use different amounts of memory. I find it surprising that Hawnuyu's usage is so low compared to Tompa'ivong's, but given all the potential differences I believe it would be possible.

1) I am going from memory with this, but am certain that I have remembered correctly because
2) I used a powerful tree-based addon for firefox to manage the tabs, and many of the tabs were not kept in memory with firefox (unlike chrome ATM), because many times I would have to wait whilst the page was reloaded and drawn - which would provide a much lower memory usage.

I do use bookmarks - well sortof.

and that photo was ancient, bear in mind, i rarely run over 250k, that was just to state when I didn't have those settings that I do now.
