Mouse and Keyboard fun with my BIOS + USB errors (Help!)

Ok, computer experts. My mouse died 30 minutes ago, don't know why and don't know what to do about it. I unplugged it before I left the computer two hours ago and nothing happened when I got back and plugged it back in. It's a USB mouse. Ok, I know this problem. Restart your computer, look what happens. It usually works...

Wrong. The BIOS gave me my favorite error, the keyboard error. Nothing worked, absolutely nothing until I changed my mouse. Got the same mouse twice. My computer accepts this one (using it right now). What went wrong here? I don't get it. The old one isn't broken - it just doesn't work on my computer anymore. When I switch to it, tried it a moment ago, I get USB errors. Everything works, just not the old mouse...

Unless it still works on other PCs, the electronics in your old mouse are dead.

I used to have an external HDD that behaved like this. Plug it in, and everything on the USB controller stopped working. If I rebooted, the system wouldn't POST if it was connected. I pulled the HDD from it and bought an enclosure.
