Hello all, first post in a very long time.

Now that Windows XP has had its support ended by Microsoft, and given that I'm running one of the better end relics that still use that system, what would you all recommend for a new OS. I've heard good things about Win 7 and Linux Ubuntu, but I'm looking for opinions.

Linux. Microsoft has lost the plot, imho.

I would say it really simple: Choose an OS which you know as best. So, if you know Linux better, use it, if MS, then use a MS OS. Also, which OS you would really prefer to use?
Also important is, to know, which software you are using* -> work a software, which you would use regularly, on Windows/Linux?

I won't like to write here "use Linux" or "use MS", because it depends what one want to do with it.

Using Linux you can  with the convenience handle sound, image (not for printiong), video, make 3d animation, office tasks. CAD systems are not yet well developed. I personally do not use Windows for more than ten years (if I'm not forced to do so because of corporate rules). My OS is Gentoo Linux.

I'm using Gentoo too :D

I agree with you there. I have a lot of programs that isn't compatible with Linux. I used Windows 7 before, but now i am using Windows 8. So, i absolutely depends if there are programs you use regurarly that are compatible with Linux, Windows or Ubuntu or some other.

Linux could be an option, Ubuntu is quite popular and you can download a live DVD and test it without installation.

My opinion:
- use what you were used to before. If you are Windows user, it's simpler to stay on that platform
- consider your hardware. Old HW could not be able to run Win8, while Win7 are still usable. I'm not sure about Linux, but in the past Linux was less HW demanding
- consider SW you need to use. If you have collection of Windows software, is it possible to get the same SW for Linux too? (or SW with similar functionality)
- if you think about Win8, are you able to use it? I don't like win8 GUI - it can work for tablets and touch screen, but what about us conservative users? You can install 3rd party utilities to get Start menu back, but I feel myself better in Win7
- there are virtualization SW, which allows you run different OS on your standard OS (VMware, Virtualbox etc.), so you can try Linux inside Windows or vice versa.
