System would probably also be faster if I ran something newer than Windows XP.

I'm not sure about this.. I think a performance in XP would be higher than in Vista and Seven. Look here: http://www.overclockers.com/windows-xp-vs-windows-7-benchmarks/

Yeah, and a 3 year old test that's using 6+ years old hardware is clearly reflecting a real world scenario?

You're pretty much always going to be better off with W7.  That doesn't necessarily mean you have to upgrade, though.

That's kinda what I thought.

Is there a way to install 16-bit program support on Win7 x64 without running the apps in a VM? If not, it'll be a 32-bit OS whenever I upgrade...

Nope. I always have Win3.1 in a VM anyway just for that purpose xD

May have just found a use for the 5x86 collecting dust in my basement...what I'm concerned about is a control program for some old hardware, so a VM is useless for that one. The others can run in VM if I must...

More research is finding more and more too. :( I'm going to have to disable the driver signing because the drivers for the PC<->Nintendo DS interface I have are unsigned open-source stuff. And I discovered I'll need Classic Shell to get the classic start menu back.

Good news is they finally released a Win7 version of the software for my UPS. :)

Now to find the time and software to upgrade...college starts soon, so it'll probably wait until xmas unless I find time in the next week or so...

Check to see if your uni/college has a deal with Microsoft to get W7 cheap.  Sometimes students/faculty can get it for almost nothing.

There's a discount at uni, but I get a license or 2 for free (along with other stuff like VS2010) since I'm an IT major. I have to find out how to get them when I start in 2 weeks.

I think it's Win7 Pro or Business...not sure if uni offers x64 versions though (I'd imagine so, but...).

I can get all the nice stuf (except Office) for free through MSDN AA program at my university. They offer Windows 7 in 32 and 64 bits.

That's what we have, so I get the same. I just don't know how to access it to get them.

I have an MSDA AA email in my college account that shows my username and says "See your program administrator for your password", so I need to wait until I can go ask for a password. :(

MSDNAA is great for free stuff. Before I left, I got myself serials for everything, just in case I ever need them :)

Yeah it is. I finally got a password for my account this week, so I just took a look at what is available. WOW. :o :o

Just some of the stuff I've seen:
* Windows 7/Vista/XP/Embedded
* Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate
* Expression Studio 4
* Office 2010
* MS-DOS 6.0 and 6.22

There's also server software and SDKs available.

Yes. Office 2010, along with Project, Visio, and Access.

If anyone wants it, I'll post the entire list of software :)

It's completely worth the thread revival.

Computer Type: That I don't know for sure. Modifications have rendered that title useless pretty much. But it's big.
Motherboard: Processor: Intel Core i7 - 8 Total Cores at 3.07gHz
RAM: 12gb DDR3 - 6x2gb
Video: AMD Radeon HD 6800 Series
Hard Drive: 1TB SCSI 6gb/s

Let's just say I have to have my actual room fan directly in front of it when overclocking. It's not pretty otherwise and I need to get some PCI fans put in.

Might want to blank out that product key!  :o
