You probably heard a lot about Spectre and Meltdown. This problem hits Intel CPUs and have almost no affect on AMD. But there are few other x86 manufacturers and a lot other weak points.
Single hacker discovered backdoor in VIA x86 CPU that allows complete control over whole cache memory for any process in system. Everything is explained on this video:

I'm sure that similar backdoors can be found in modern CPUs or motherboard chipsets. Hopefully no one use them ... so far.
