Not sure about Win7, but on XP you can hide them very easily...

My system used to do that...I wrote an automatic wallpaper changer specifically for my Avatar pics due to XP's lack of a built-in one. I turned it off though...the frequently changing pretty pics were causing a loss of productivity

Not sure about Win7, but on XP you can hide them very easily...

I have an add on that creates boxes for my icons and I can hide them...mainly to hide the recycle bin.
