One good part about being a student is, when your university is a member of the MSDN Academic Alliance you get everything for free (i. e. Win XP, Vista, 7, Visual Studio, Server - except of Office!). So I don't need to pay for it ;)

btt: I use mainly Mac/Linux at home and Windows/Linux at work.
Preferred Linux: Ubuntu and openSUSE (using Suse since version 6) ;)

Funky is to install Windows 98 and go to some hacker forums and say they can't hack you ;)

I guess that I'm the only one here who almost exclusively uses Widnows, by the principle "if it ain't broken, don't fix it!". :)

I use Unix/Linux on my servers though (except for the gaming server).

but you can't modify a mac at all.
Windows you can a bit
linux is damn near completely modifiable unless I'm mistaken
Only mostly AWOL.

Elektrolurch

Linux is totally modifiable, yes. But why would you want to modify a Mac? ;D Different styles or sounds.. whatever are available. And you needn't work on the system, it IS already optimized.. :)

Debian GNU/Linux for pretty much everything. I have a 360 for games, so I don't really need to play them on my computer.

But on the off chance that I do need to do something that requires Windows (that doesn't work in WINE) I use Windows 7.

I use Linux because of it's stability, speed, and most of all; security.
All I want is a single thing worth fighting for.

Maybe it isn't set up right for what you want it for.

I've never heard about people with this problem.. But yeah, they aren't completely modifiable. :D It takes about 15 seconds to start up my MacBook and two to shut it down. Multitasking within 12 programs or something is no problem, I can play several games in max. resolution on an external 24" monitor.. ;D And you can use it for years, it never gets any slower.. ;)

Maybe so, but it ain't worth the price imo. Besides, I'm really irritated at two things in Mac OS:

- Fine if you want to be "different", but switching all hotkeys is the wrong way!
- Am I the only one that thing that their Window handling system is pure crap? You can only select window to Application level, not individual windows (but it's quite funny sometimes to see my dad looking for the right window by draging the overlaying windows away :D).

And also a minor problem: Why can't they just design a decent mouse? The one they ship with their computer might just be the worst mouse I've seen.

Elektrolurch

Well... you press F3 and have all windows in front of you. ::) and there are loads of other hotkeys... but.. it's no problem for me. And you can change the mouse to whatever you want ...

The hotkeys are really awesome! Sometimes I just sit in front of my Windows machine and press some key combinationswondering why nothing happens ;)

Elektrolurch

Cmd+q is useful. ;)

And you have ALL the additional signs like ]{\[³$_. and so on.. all over the keyboard. :D It's soo much fun to find this out. ;)

Gonna have to go with Mac OS X. Pretty solid standards compliance across the board, excellent first and third party software (you get what you pay for), excellent development environment with all the usual tools, and as for customizability, you can actually get pretty deep into the system if you really want to, but in general I have no problem letting experts in system design and human-computer interaction do that stuff for me.
