Click on the link above and scroll down to the 4th or 5th entry!

WE HAVE A BOOTH!! LearnNa'vi.org will not only have a panel presence, but also have a booth on the main floor. Click the spoiler for the booth info.

So I have received a reply from the event organizers of PHXCC and this is what they said:

To which the response was...

So we have a time slot now. All that remains is the general promotion of the panel at the convention itself. I am calling upon all of you to go out to your various forums and post about this and spread the word. Only through the promotion of this panel, and other like it at other conventions, will we see a continual growth in the Learn Na'vi community.

Also, if you are planning to attend, please post in the roll call thread also. If we get a certain amount of people to attend, we can make it cheaper for everyone. Tickets are normally $30 each for the whole convention, but I believe if we get 12 or more we can get them reduced to $25 each.

Still accepting any suggestions. I will be posting the final materials and such as things progress.

Even if you don't have experience running a panel, yet have attended one, what kept your attention, if at all. Also, ANY SUGGESTIONS, whether they be from experienced con-goers or otherwise, is highly welcome. Don't be afraid, I won't bite... hard...

When I was thinking about a panel for Baycon, here are some of the basic thoughts I've had about it.

  • How much can you really learn in an hour?  The truth is not much, so my thoughts were that the goal should be heavily towards getting people interested in it and then giving them the tools to find what they need.
  • Any detailed lessons on the language would probably be in one ear and out the other.  Things like infixes, lenition, etc, probably best left mentioned as a feature of what makes the language different, but not actively taught.
  • That leaves the focus being on 1. The history of the language, how it was created, etc and 2. Simple things to say in Na'vi...  Basic conversational stuff and responses, etc...  And of course proper pronunciation along with that.
  • Probably have something to hand out to people in attendance which gives the phrases being taught with pronunciation and translation, and then a big plug for learnnavi.org, and other resources for learning.  Maybe even business card sized things for learnnavi.org?
  • It seems like aside from a conversational demonstration and history stuff, anything done is going to end up being interactive.  How should that be handled?  For more than a few, obviously 1:1 with the panelist (At least at that point) wouldn't be terribly reasonable.  What are other options?  Off the top of my head I could think of grabbing a volunteer and teaching them how to say the phrases in front of everyone, or splitting people into small groups.

I suggest you wear a Kaltxì Palulukan tee shirt! (and have a poster of Tony the Thanator! -- you have my permission to print and sell them at the Phoenix Comicon and keep all of the profits, if you want to hand them out for  buck or two).

Will you have a printed (color--or at least color cover) copy of the Easy Way to Learn Na'vi fun activity book on hand? It could get you some extra love. Also, we should definitely announce the con on the podcast. We could have even covered it last night.

Yaay! TYVM! By the way, Ting and I want her to interview you. Please say yes (she is a delicate flower and bruises easily). We really botched the "Na'vi lesson" last night in the podcast, but it was so funny (well, to us) that we are going to leave it in. Editing tonight.

Ok seriously, real reason I replied wasn't to be melodramatic but suggest that this should be taken to PMs.  Back to your regularly scheduled thread. :)

Actually, that's not a bad idea...  Maybe not the whole book, but SOME sort of activity to hand out, maybe one of the simple things from the activity book.  As far as selling, typically con permission would be needed for that.  Some can be very picky about who sells what where, but are usually happy to work with you on it.

Okay, I'll stop fooling around now, but I will say (publicly) that I *totally* got that :D (and I have not forgotten, and have no plans to.)

I hope the Phoenix Con is goes well for LN and Na'vi in general. I have no doubt there will be a LOT of Avatar buzz. Someone take pictures (if you are allowed).

I've considered having a Na'vi room party at Baycon (Same weekend) and putting a sign advertising it in Na'vi (With fine print english translation..  Maybe...)  I actually know someone who is likely to have a room on the party floor I might be able to talk into letting me use one night (If he isn't already letting someone else use it for a night like he did last year).  I'm just not sure I have it in me to host a party.

I am making a Na'vi costume, so if you wantbi could try to come as a "native" to help out & create buzz, unless you think that would be too over the top/gimmicky?

I think having a Na'vi there would be cool. I dunno about someone on the panel, but that is not for me to say, really. But we should have more than a few Na'vi at SD ComiCon.

All very valid Ideas. I used to be in JROTC and trying to teach cadets stuff was always a pain. K.I.S.S. is advice for life in which I tend to follow here. Yes, I will be having handouts for everyone containing basic vocab, pronunciation guide, conversational phrases, and LearnNavi.org on it also. About the interactive part, I was thinking of grabbing at least one volunteer or singling people out from the crowd to try saying stuff. The small groups idea is good also, but we'll see as time progresses.

I suggest you wear a Kaltxì Palulukan tee shirt! (and have a poster of Tony the Thanator! -- you have my permission to print and sell them at the Phoenix Comicon and keep all of the profits, if you want to hand them out for  buck or two).

Oh you bet I will wear it, on the time's I'm not dressed up as an RDA scientist... or wait, I could wear it at the same time! Booyah! And about the workbook, Yes, I will have a few of the available materials from the website printed out for people to see what they can get their hands on. I.E. a color version of the Activity book, the Pocket guide, Taronyu's dictionaries, etc.

BTW, I sent the proposal in, if anyone would like a copy of the proposal I made, PM me ad I'll get the word doc to ya.

LONG POSTS FTW!!!

I just want to show off Rolyu's cool new cover. She has been working really hard on making an actual cartoon Na'vi cover for the book (instead of the generic cover I originally gave it). I could really care less if people see my crappy work.
