Hi!

We'd like to make Eytukan's bow. Only for cosplay purposes, for the present.
First we try to find materials.
It's important for it to be flexible (so that we can stress it), but also strong enough in spite of the cuttings and notches at its end.
While analysing the film we met an open question.
What material can be used for the two blue antennas? At the biginning of the film it looks like some kind of stretched leather, but after Eytukan's death it appers to be made of wood with lots of jags.
Should somebody have seen it at the exhibition, or have any information about it, we would be pleased to hear of it.

Thanks a lot:
Kif

Why not just use the bows that the horse mounted archery competitors use in Hungary?  You could dress it up to look like Etukans bow without much problem at all. As an archer, I think that the tips of the forked blue branches or antlers could be range pins for shooting at long range.

Yes, I know this bow (made and owned by Cassidy, a brilliant cosplayer lady!) very well, I saw it and touched it, just like the gentleman in the picture (who also borrowed it for the sake of the photo...). It really looks good (especially from a certain distance), is made mainly from reed and paper, so it's neither strong nor durable... Absolutely perfect for cosplay purposes, but what I really want is something stronger and a bit more durable (even if it's not a real bow for real usage, since to conventions it would not be allowed to be taken in!).
So the real question is: what can those blue stuffs be made from? I don't want to make them from paper or something like that.
Any ideas?

Although I've never worked with it (yet) I've heard good things about Wonderflex. It's a sheet of plastic that gets soft and moldable when heated up. With it you can make fairly thin pieces, and it might work for this. I read about it here in this cosplayer's blog post: http://www.kamuicosplay.com/2009/12/wonderful-world-of-wonderflex.html
that same cosplayer made a video about it: http://youtu.be/YElXK-_uIAg (turn on the closed captions if you don't speak German!)
apparently it's best to sandwich some craft foam inbetween 2 layers of wonderflex for stability.
You can also just use 2 pieces of wonderflex without the foam inside for a thinner look.

You can buy wonderflex here: http://www.cosplaysupplies.com/store.php?s=M4UZ

Whenever you start working on this, regardless of what material you use, please post your progress and methods on the internet somewhere if you get the time so I may have a look. I'm thinking about constructing my own original design cosplay bow and the any tips I can obtain before hand would be great.

This website also has some good wonderflex information: http://www.costuming.org/wonderflex.htm

Sarah! Thanks for the tip! I don't know this material, but I like it. And it gave me an idea. I've got some ,,klöckler foil" which I bought for an exo-mask-to-be. It's transparent, but thin and softening when heated. Maybe I'll try it for the blue stuff...
I've seen your blog, it's very interesting!
Have you seen this bow (Eytukan's) at the exhibition? Is it possible that the blue parts have two different-looking sides? What do you think?
Any development or happening about the bow (and anything else concerning Na'vi stuffs) will be shown either on FACEBOOK (soaia leNa`vi [A Na`vi család] (Cosplay)) or in our BLOG (soaia leNa`vi (A Na`vi család)). (Our blog haven't been updated for a time, but it will be...The other thing is that it's in Hungarian. The facebook page contains some English comments too, so should you have any questions, you can ask there...)

Eytukan's bow is not at the exhibition, so I've only seen what you have seen. The difference between the pictures might be the lighting, or a difference in texture on each side, my guess is as good as yours. I've seen your blog before, I use Google Translate when viewing it. It's a very imperfect translation system, but I can understand the very basic meaning with it. Are any of you coming to AvatarMeet 2012? I'd love to see you guys there.

I'm afraid it'll remain only a dream... Kif and I would love to come, but it would cost a fortune to travel there...  :'( We have checked the prices of flight tickets, and found that it would cost 10 months' salary for the three of us (including the kid) to fly to America. And it's only the journey...  :( Spiritually we will be with you!  :) Please think of us once in a while!

Sarah!
It occured to me where I saw Eytukan's bow. There was a row of pics, where several accessories could be seen. I used these pics when I made the feathery headstuff with the spiral ornament. (http://hollywoodmoviecostumesandprops.blogspot.com/2009/12/avatar-movie-props-and-costume.html)

Awww, that's a shame. But I totally understand, I live in America and still am having trouble getting the funds together due to prior engagements and lack of vacation time. Still, perhaps you could have someone take some detailed pictures of the prop bow for you during the 2012 meetup?

Well, it would be great! This bow is very important to us. It was one of the first objects we wanted to re-create, but still we haven't made it yet...

Hi!

I have consulted with some cosplayers (including Cassidy, owner of the mentioned bow) and got a possible solution. Maybe there will be other ideas on its grounds.
Let's suppose the blue ,,antennas" are made of stretched ikran wing-skin.

1) Klöckler foil or Wonderflex will be the base of the form. (1)
2) Make stiffeners from clay or something. (2)
3) Stretch some lycra (elastic fabrik) over it. (A)
4) Stick the fabric to the edges of the stiffeners.
5) Paint the fabric using a speciel paint for silicone

The problem with Klöckler and Wonderflex is that if I use them and touch the stretched fabric, the stiffeners will be felt.

If I used some wire for stiffeners, they would be felt too. Also it would be easy to bend when carried or transported...

Does anybody have any idea how to refine these steps?
