All,

I came to this party a bit too late (Jan 2012) to be able to get any (official) Avatar T-shirts, but I have some tie-dye stuff lying around and I'd like to take a crack at making a Na'vi-striped T-shirt.  The only problem is, I don't have a clue how to do it :)  Could someone give me a hand?

I like your idea, but I have no experience with making T shirts. Maybe if you do end up making one, I would put some text on it in "Papyrus" font saying "Na'vi Inside" or something.
Good luck! :)

Just Googled some images of Tie dye stripes and thought that one was interesting.  I'm not sure how they did that though.

Cool idea!

I have made a tye-dye T-shirt with a single spiral. I know a bit how it works.

Material:

- White T-shirt
- Liquid dye
- Gloves
- Something to cover your table. (garbage bags can do the trick)
- Large enough rubber bands (3 minimum)
- Something to help you apply the dye on the T-shirt
- A fork or a clip to help you make the spiral

Unfortunately, the teacher bought and prepared the dying, so I don't know this part. However, it requires some care. Don't do it directly on your tablecloth unless you want to throw it away.

I recommend you to wear gloves when you manipulate/use the dye.

The steps:

1. You have a humid T-shirt. Stretch it before you start.
2. Now it's time to make the spiral. I think you can have one or two and they can be placed anywhere. So, wherever you want the spiral to be, you twist the T-shirt to make the spiral. You can use a fork or a clip to help you.
3. Now you have to place the rubber bands. You have to divide the T-shirt into several equal sections. That should also keep the spiral(s).
4. You can apply the dye you prepared. Alternating the colors can make something interesting.
You will have to wait a short while (like 10 minutes+) before continuing.

Now it's time for the finition of the T-shirt. The teacher did this part too. What I know that you probably have to remove the extra ink (in the water?) and let it dry. When it's finally ready, then you have to wash it alone with some other products.

If this is really a tie-dye T-shirt, then it requires a similar but different technique. I don't know how you can make stripes instead of spirals.

Ideally, I'd like to get an effect similar to what I have on the cases for my portable devices (image attached).  I've been slamming Google pretty hard and haven't had much luck in that department, so I'm willing to compromise.  I may have to get some more dye and do some experimenting ;)

I love those cases! Where did you get them?

Type "how to tie die stripes" into Youtube, there's plenty of stuff there.

I had them custom-made from a pattern that Palulukan Maktoyu Ta'lengean made (with his permission)

General guide for getting different shapes.

You can use Tulip dye for tie dye, which comes in an easy to use squeeze tube, but it often comes in a giant pack with way too many colors you're not going to use. I would personally use rit dye for this.

A tutorial I found for stripes using rit dye

That tutorial above isn't exactly what you're going for, but maybe a good starting point. Instead of accordion folding it diagonally, accordion fold it vertically. The best advice with stuff like this I can give is, if you go into projects expecting to get a less-than-perfect product the first few times you'll save yourself a bunch of frustration. 90% of my time crafting is trial and error, practicing, cussing, then getting better, and like 10% of my time is spent working on an actual final product. Buy more than one t-shirt if possible.

No problems there; I have three T-shirts and can get more very easily.  There are several craft stores within spitting distance of my home.

Of course, once I create these, I'll post photos :)
