Kaltxì :P

For more than a year now I've been thinking on whether getting such a tattoo (or rather do it myself) or not. I think it'd look mindblowingly awesome if you have a neat sanhì pattern on your skin when exposed to blacklight. Also it'd be a little secret you can't see in daylight (if you used titanium white, which I would), my little secret (well, not that little, but you get what I mean), that I'm a Na'vi nerd, hrh. So I'd be totally into doing that.

But, yeah, there's the risk. In our tattoo shop (where I work), we still refuse to use UV active ink, whether it's claimed to be "safe", tested, whatever. It's still kinda unsafe, I think, for you still hear about allergic reactions (itching, sore skin) way after getting such a tattoo done...

But on the other hand, it's just small dots. Teeny tiny dots spread over your body. Wait. Your whole body. ... Gnaaargh... :(

Still quarreling with that decision...

I could easily buy such ink and tattoo sanhì myself. I could at least test it on a small part of my body first, kefyak? Forearm or whatever, since those are messed up anyway. After some time, when everything's still fine, I could do more...

Wiya...  :-\ ???

Heavy necroposting:

I finally did it. I just ordered the UV ink, took me long enough ;D It will probably arrive here this week, we'll see when I try it out. Between Christmas and new year's at the latest, at the earliest the coming weekend... I'm so exited! :D

Will start on my left hand and forearm, if all goes well with healing and all, I will continue. Just need to get a blacklight bulb beforehand tho, hrh...

Interesting, and which (and how big) tattoo you want make by using of this?

Really ;D

For starters I wanna try it out on my left hand and forearm. If all heals well and there are no complications whatsoever, I will do my whole body, in several sessions maybe.
Here's the concept:

Seze

I have a tattoo on the back of my left shoulder, and it has some of the UV ink in it.

Txantsan nang! What brand of UV ink was used, do you remember? How long have you had this tattoo for and did you have any problems at all specific to the UV ink?

Sìltsan säfpìl ma Eana Unil :D Also I really like the image You drawn, only ears doesn't fit.
What color of ink You chose? Blueish / whiteish or solid color?
Waiting for results.

Seze, Your tattoo looks strange. Colors looks perfect, "glowing" dots even better. But why You chose that size and shape?

Its the handshape for "I Love You" in ASL (American Sign Language).  I got heavily involved with the local Deaf community a few years ago, and the tattoo was a merging of Avatar and ASL.

I chose a more or less transparent tattoo ink with no real color undertone, to get the best glowing result and so that the sanhì won't be visible in daylight/normal light. I want my soon-to-be bioluminescence visible only under blacklight, since I'll also tattoo my face (last session probably) ;D This is the ink I ordered: https://www.killerinktattoo.co.uk/kuro-sumi-glow-clear-30ml-1oz

And there are no ears because I used a female human silhouette as a blank base, not a Na'vi one, since I'm not a Na'vi (nìkeftxo) ^^

Ma Seze,
I'd love if you could also answer my question, would be really interesting to know about your experience with UV ink :)

The ASL background of your tattoo makes it extra special imo, cool idea ^^

Of course I'll share progress and result shots with you guys here :)

Oeru txoa livu, I missed that you had asked me some questions.  I got it done at a tattoo place in Denver, so I'm not quite sure what the brand was.  I think it might have been Moms brand, but not overly confident in that.  If you really want to know, you could contact the tattoo place I went to (Old World Tattoo, in Arvada, CO).  I've had the tattoo for a year now.  No issues with the ink that I'm aware of.  I've heard is does lose its vibrance under UV light as it ages, but can be touched up pretty easily.  The UV ink was clearish - white color.  I don't think he mixed anything for the blues, the 2 shades he used were straight out of the bottle.  The pic of the tattoo glowing under UV was taken last month in Pandora as part of the annual AvatarMeet event.  So thats how strong the glowing effect is after I've had it for a year.  Hope that helps  :D

Helps very much, irayo seiyi nìtxan! :)
I'll see if I contact the tattoo parlor you went to, might be interesting if they're willing to share info with a fellow tattooist from Germany, hrh.
The one I got is also clear-white, I guess I'll just go for it nonetheless ;D But good to know that nothing has happened even after a year, and well... touch-ups are normal for any kind of tattoo, depending on many factors (skin type, metabolism, caring for the tattoo/skin, exposure to sunlight, age, blablah) the tattoo always ages and fades away, so I expect even UV ink to not look good/still glowing intensely for 50 years straight ^^

Eana Unil

Tweaked the look a bit digitally to simulate how it would more or less actually look under UV blacklight :) Can't wait, hopefully it'll arrive here tomorrow hrh ;D

Toliman

O.o ... it looks really great (if it will really looks as on your last image).

Tirea Aean

That's quite beautifully symmetrical :D Interested to see how this turns out.

I checked Your project with fresh eye.
IMHO You draw to much lines on torso area. Na'vi don't have that much dots.

And I asked about glowing color under UV light. I'm sure that Tanhì should be almost invisible during day time = transparent ink.

Ma Ertew,
I consciously added more lines/sanhì than most Na'vi seem to have, since I'm a mere human and not a blue, 3m tall Na'vi and I need to compensate for that somehow ;D Hrh. Well, I tried designs with fewer lines, but this one I shared here I liked most. Zapped through the movie beforehand to research the patterns shown in the movie, but even though I like them all, they were too "understated" for my taste ;D

Well, I tried it out today. If you're interested in the results so far, here's my blogpost about it: https://eanaunil.blogspot.de/2017/12/project-sanhitattoo.html

Cannot add comment to Your blog.

Na'vi dots have similar density to LED tape, type "300/5m" or "60/m", but some of them doesn't shine, some are misplaced. You may use fragment of that stripe as reference.
I checked photos and cannot see any luminescent effect  :( . Hope it's just camera problem, not the poor ink.
