Belo Monte license revoked!

Holy crap...

If the dam goes operational, it's over.

Hopefully, with the help of numerous and severe corruption allegations, it'll stick this time.

Also, here's a link to the Amazon Watch online petition. It's not much, but it's better than watching the death of a tropical paradise from thousands of miles away:

Yeah, I too got an email from Amazon Watch about this news. At least it's some good news for a change, and hopefully it'll stick and there will be an end to the whole dam project.

Unfortunately, it will probably be a temporary delay. Most of the problems listed in denying the license are 'correctible' (to the sense that a mitigation plan exists, even if it isn't a satisfactory mitigation plan). Additionally, money talks, and apparently, there is a LOT of money behind this. I am sure there are decisionmakers who will never have to worry about eating again (in the sense they are now independently very wealthy) who were paid off sub rosa on this project.

But one can hope. Maybe the Brazilian government will use this denial to 'hang the utility consortium by its own dam'. If they permanently deny the license (and better yet, make them blast out the major dam structures), it will discourage anyone from ever trying anything like this again.

I am generally a supporter of hydroelectric projects. But this one is so destructive that it really does need to be stopped.

Hydro is actually really bad news most of the time.

Micro hydropower projects are literally the only way to do it without causing a lot of problems. Large impoundment dams are probably always going to be a huge problem, and they are inherently unsustainable because they pretty much ruin whatever ecosystem they are built in.

Most of the fish that lived in that stretch of the Xingu are probably dead already, with the exception of the hardiest species (which are probably not the endemics, since endemics are often more sensitive). If it weren't for the fact that there are private aquarists breeding them, L046, the zebra hypancistrus "pleco" would probably be extinct already due to sedimentation.
