Gonna go see Mad Max?

I'm not. I'd rather bury the entire production team neck deep in the sand and watch ants pick out their eyeballs.

The ecology of the Namibian desert is extremely fragile; coastal fogs roll in from the Atlantic and allow extremely rare endemic plants to grow, but due to the harsh conditions, it takes decades for a mature Namibian plant community to form, and a wide variety of endemic reptiles and drought-tolerant amphibians rely on the plants to attract food (insects) and provide shelter.

It's terrible. Who allowed to film inside national park should be punished hard. Any "standard" dessert would be as good too, I'm sure. Money does not repair it.

Irayo, Raiden, for posting this news.

I'm not seeing the movie because I'm not interested in seeing any of the Mad Max films -- they're not my thing.  ::)

When I see stuff like this, I try and take a 'wait and see if its really true' attitude. Film production crews these days are generally sensitive to their surroundings, especially in situations like this that warrant some extra sensitivity. Hollywood does have a very strong 'green' contingent, including James Cameron. Environmentalists like to blow things out of proportion, those seen as exploiters try to marginalize any problem they know exists. The real truth almost always lies somewhere in between.

We have a number of areas here in Nevada that are sandy. What is interesting about these areas is that the wind constantly rearranges them. If you drove a fleet of mutant vehicles through the sand (and all of the vehicles in Mad Max would qualify as 'mutant vehicles' by 'Burning Man' standards), in a day or two you would never know they had been there.

As far as being a good film, I am not sure I understood it. Some parts of the story were rather bizarre.

No.

Environmentalists rarely blow things out of proportion if they're well informed. These idiots destabilized part of an ecosystem within a high-priority conservation area, an area which is also currently being affected by anthropogenic climate change.

You're also making an assumption about the characteristics of a desert half a world away. Namibia contains what is probably the most unique desert on the planet, with perhaps the only similar region being parts of the Atacama desert of Chile.

You're better than this.

What you say is true of responsible environmentalists. I speak of radical environmentalists that are mor einterested in shutting down society than saving the planet. I fight the latter type constantly.
