Well many of us are now in favor of perhaps having both at least somewhat close to each other. I'm trying to do a bit of research on eco-villages atm but time is not in my favor! I'll post anything I find about it environmentally here!!

I am personally totally against the total elimination of Technology. We developed it for a reason, the only things we need to get rid of are the things that are not really necessary- Video games and the like.

Sorry to get off topic ^_^;;

These last three responses make me very happy. It seems that I am not the only one who has an idea similar to this ;D Even though I am slightly isolated, I'm doing what I can to live up to this dream of mine (ours, really).

Today, I bought a shamrock at Lowe's to help in the fight against muscular dystrophy and I signed it "From LearnNa'vi.org: Eywa Ngahu!"

This is what I mean by The Basic Idea. Random, small acts of kindness and any iota of help I can offer makes me happy. I also buy the Dawn dishwashing soap that donates $1 for every bottle purchased to the National Wildlife Foundation. It really is the little things that count.

See, if I buy 1 bottle per month, that's $1 per month for 12 months = $12 (we wash dishes very often at my house)
I've been doing it for 2 years $12 x 2 years =$24
If I can get 10 people to do the same, that's 11 people buying 1 bottle per month= 11 bottles per month = $11 per month x 12 months = $132/year.
If THEY can get 10 people each to do the same...it really adds up.

Kaltxì ma aysmuk,

How about tree planting programmes? Help sustain the environment because tress are now being cut faster than they are being planted.

Help preserve Nature.

Well, we're planting six new ayutral in my yard this summer, but I don't know much about planting programmes in my area.
What I do know though is that iPhone now has an app called "a Real Tree" and for $0.99, they will plant a tree in Honduras, Brazil, Ethiopia Senegal, India or a number of other countries and then you get a digital tree that grows on your iPhone. According to Urban Farms magazine, over 1,400 trees have been planted so far. How about buying one in the name of Learn Na'vi.org? I've been signing things that I buy for Muscular Dystrophy "From LearnNavi.org"

In the towns surrounding mine (but oddly enough, not in the town i live in) there are tree laws that require the replacement of any trees that are cut down. You're allowed to plant new trees as young as a year. The old version of the law required you to replace a tree with a tree of equivalent age, and girth. However, it became prohibitively expensive to do so. And even the law makers themselves agreed to that when one law maker ran afould with the law when he found out it would cost him $5500 to replace one tree! So the new version of the law is somewhat flexible. It's a decent ordinance, and keeps areas green.
See that shadow? It's the last one you're gonna see.

I like the idea of replacing trees, hopefully more communities will realize how beneficial this is and adopt similar ordinances.

Simple things:
-plant a tree
-clean up an empty lot
-install bins specifically for metal, glass and plastic waste
-donate to charities
-volunteer
-get educated! (People who go to college are more likely to get exposed to other people who care and are active in working towards a better tomorrow)
-buy the little hearts/shamrocks/butterflies/rainbows/red wagons (Riley Hospital for Children) for a dollar and help fight and find the cure/treatment for diseases like breast cancer, muscular dystrophy, and cystic fibrosis
-purchase items that are better for the environment/donate an amount to a charity organization for every bottle/bag/box/bar sold
-get an inside plant (studies show that plants in the workplace/office space have a positive effect on worker morale and also help to clean the air. It is said that placing a small potted cactus near your computer lowers negative ions [I read it in a magazine once, but I'm not 100% sure])

The big one: Perform random acts of kindness. Pay It Forward, Karma, Rule of Three, whatever you call it. What goes around comes back around, sometimes twice over. Random acts of kindness are free, easy, simple, quick and most of all they make you feel good! When you hold a door open for someone when they are having a bad day, they tend to feel better and therefore treat everyone they meet with a better attitude. I spend a lot of time watching people and I find that when a stressed-out mom of three is handed a cart so that she doesn't have to wait for one, she is nicer to her kids, other customers and the cashier. Think of it as a huge pyramid effect, all starting from an act of random kindness. Think "Evan Almighty" and if you haven't seen it, go rent it. Act of Random Kindness = ARK

There are quite a lot of tree planting programmes here so I can participate in them to start. =)

The park right down the street suffered the loss of several trees due to the rain storm from last week. They are replacing the trees, but also planting about 20 more to help create shade and cooler areas for relaxing. One thing the park is doing is a "Buy a tree" campaign. $1 gets you a 2 foot sapling to plant. I already ordered 50, and along with the kids from the children's hospital (the same kids who enjoyed the avatar screening, and the now upcoming alice in wonderland screening) we're going to make a small park on the grounds of the hospital for the kids to enjoy on nice days.

Sorry to bring up an "old" thread, but since this topic was only the third down on the list, I figured it'd be alright in this case.

Anyways, glad to see I'm not the only one who had this idea. I agree fully with Rain's sentiment of wanting to be part of the Real Life Na'vi Tribe, but not being able to reasonably do so. I think doing things to help our Eywa is a great way to feel connected to the tribe's efforts and cause, however.

First off, here's a two ideas I had for ways we at Learn Na'vi can get together and help out.

1. Community farming. I don't know much about it, but some towns have plots of land available for people to come and grow their own crops on, though it usually costs a rental fee of some kind. We'd have to look into the legal technicalities possibly of obtaining a plot of land to grow crops on, but I think it could be a very good experience. Maybe it would be in someone's yard, and we'd all gather to their house each day to work on the plants, or maybe we can buy a small plot of land somewhere and go there.

The benefits of this that I can see would be:
+A way for Na'vi friends to bond with each other, over the care and maintenance of living plants. It gives us a chance to meet, chat, work as a group, and enjoys the fruits (and vegetables  :P ) of community labor.
+It saves money. Growing our own food is going to be cheaper, monetarily speaking. Once any initial investments of seeds, dirt, fertilizers, etc. are out of the way, it'll be quite reasonable, I would think.
+We may be able to form a compost heap. I'd like to learn more about what goes in to a compost heap, but I know they're good for growing things, at least! It'd be a good way to recycle our more organic waste products, rather than throwing them in the trash.
+It's incredibly rewarding. We'll feel pretty darned good about ourselves whenever a plant fruits  :)

2. We try to get as many LN members as possible to plant one (or more!) tree(s) in their yard somewhere. This will be a tree to not just sit back and let grow, but to spend time with, kind of. Plant it, and wish it well. Visit it often, sit by it, study under it, talk with it, and get to know its look and shape. We can start a topic somewhere on the board where users can post pictures of their special tree as it grows. Maybe once a month progress photos?

The benefits I see in this are:
+Getting to know a tree/trees in general in a different way, allowing the person to feel a lot closer to them in understanding.
+It's a tree! They're good for the earth :P
+With other people doing it, I think it'll catch on more, and people will have fun talking about things they notice about their tree.

Sorry for the long post! I just really wanted to get those ideas out there.

'Itan Atxur

I'm willing to do that tree idea. I just need a camera... and a seed!

ANNOUNCEMENT: Go out and buy the new national Geographic special issue about water.

Did you know that 97.5% of the earth's water is too salty to drink? Only 2.5% is fresh water, and one percent of that is frozen in glaciers. This issue is all about water conservation and it also has a double-sided map that has information about water usage all over the world.

Growing your own food = a totally awesome idea.  Totally.  I'm big into tomatoes myself and am growing 28 (or is it 29? I lost count  ;D) heritage varieties this year, along with heritage cucumbers, peppers, tomatilloes and peas.

Not only is there a monetary savings, but also the more people who grow their own veggies and fruits, the less they rely on veggies and fruits trucked and flown in from halfway around the world!

Just one small thing people can do.  Plus heritage tomatoes are SO MUCH TASTIER than the kind you buy in the store.  OME seriously SO much better. :o

Prrwll Nari

@Amaya

Are Heritage tomatoes the same as Heirloom tomatoes?

Also, that's a lot of veggies! I wish I could grow that many D: I'm still living in an apartment though, so there's not room on my porch. I grow what I can though, but it's mostly herbs (which I love <3)
