The Basic Idea

There has been much talk about a permanent or semi-permanent place for those who wish to live like the Na'vi, some year-round and others for shorter periods. There has been talk of finding a place to live, how to make money to support it, how to run it, etc.

I have a different idea. Instead of spending money, why not make money and give to causes that also wish to save this planet? How about volunteering for similar causes? I'm talking the Environmental Justice Foundation, the National Geographic Foundation, Habitat for Humanity, the National Wildlife Federation, Campaign Earth, Earth First!, Gaia Mater, NatureServe, funds and causes to help the people in Haiti, and hundreds of humanitarian and ecological organizations and foundations all over the world. My idea is that instead of making a small place just for the Na'vi, why not make the whole world a veritable Pandora?

What I would like to see is a group that offers memberships, like many Christian groups, and can also volunteer to help other organizations and hold its own charity events, possibly even at a permanent or semi-permanent site for the Na'vi(because that would be SWEET, but it would take considerable time). We could organize like the Red Cross or the Boy/Girl Scouts of America and work together towards goals that mesh with our Na'vi-esque values of helping our planet.

This discussion is open for questions towards me regarding my idea, and I'd love to hear more opinions!

It would be nice to see some Na'vi charities set up. Though of course for now, everyone's donation money should be focused on Haiti. In the future though I imagine we could get some strong work going. It would be fantastic if Na'vi was closely associated with good charity work.

That's one of the ideas. I think we should start small first. Let's keep this going?

You see, I REALLY like this idea. I really do. I totally think it's COMPLETELY worth while no matter what. And yet I'm afraid it is in the end futile. While it may actually be possible to prevent further damage to our planet, I think humanity as a whole is beyond the point where it cares enough to actually do anything about it.

Sure, there are plenty of good intelligent people who REALLY DO care and are trying to do their part. But one thing I find is that the more intelligent the person, the quieter they are. It's the ignorant, selfish people making all the noise and ridiculing those who actually want to do something to help (I mean, seriously? HOW is being a "tree hugger" a bad thing? How can ANYBODY think that?). In the end, capitalism and ignorance will prevent humanity from saving itself  :(

But none the less, I'm trying to do my part and won't give up no matter what!

I'm working on it! I'm not quite where I need to be yet, but I'll get there!

A good website to find volunteer opportunities is idealist.org.  It seems to be (with my limited exploration of the site) a good way to find volunteer opportunities in many areas, including (but not limited to) environment, ecology, wildlife, etc., both in your own community and internationally.

Hope this was a useful post!

It's EXTREMELY useful, Tireapamtseo. Another thought would be for those of you who live close enough together to meet and volunteer as a group for causes and activities. Like the Red Cross, with t-shirts 'n' everything lol. Sure we may have small groups to begin with, but "A drop at a time fills the bucket"

Another thought I had recently: those of us who live close enough to each other getting together in a group, possibly all dressing in your Learn Na'vi shirts (or in full Na'vi cosplay!!) and pulling together for some kind or project, like cleaning up a park or doing volunteer work. It'd get a lot of attention. The article on the Palistenians who dressed up like Na'vi for their protest sure got some air-time. We may even consider going as an add-on for a larger group, like the Red Cross. This is where I think we should start if we want to get our own charity/organization started. Getting out there could be the first step to get us enough attention so that we can show how we want to help and what we're about. Any6 thoughts? I'm working out this germ of an idea with this thread and your help.

I would love to donate and do volunteer work for the environment and for other people! ^_^ I wish that I had seen this thread earlier! I have an idea- I'm going to run by the Tribe the idea of donating a large portion of our funds to various charities and activist groups that go along with what we all believe, and see what they think ^_^ Irayo for the idea!

Lol! This board was actually born in the Na'vi Tribe board!!

But yeah, I think we should donate too, but we need money first!!

I'm glad this is really catching on. I really don't have the resources to go and live like the Na'vi, so this is going tohave to be as close as I can get. I figured that those of us who have families can't just pick up and head off to Brazil, so I figured why not come up with a way for that portion of us to help as well? There is plenty to do in your own community, if one just keeps their eyes open.

I just have this vision of people wearing "Lern Na'vi" shirts all working together for a great cause: making our world a better place. ;)

Actually, I know this is slightly off topic, but we are not yet sure where the Tribe is going to be. As for the whole Not wanting to abandon your life thing, I personally am going to continue living the life I wanted while still trying to participate in this Tribe ^_^ I want to do scientific research, and I don't think that there are any good supercolliders in the forest ^_^;;

Well I'll tell you what, you guys get the tribe established and even though I probably won't be a perm-member, I won't be a stranger! Participation, even if at a distance, is a must for me.

One of the things I kept trying to bring up in the tribe idea is an eco-village. The problem is, there's a lot of social momentum in the tribe board for a 100% break from technology, with only enough technology to contact the outside world in case of a dire emergency.

It's all well and good for those who wish it, but not everyone wants to live like that.

I think here is a good place to talk about general green living where we already live, and perhaps (in the future) some folks might be tempted to become part of an eco-community.

My arguments for an eco-community partially address the issue of where our money and efforts go towards. Instead of getting some land and a few necessaities and disappearing into the forest, an eco-community --properly done-- can serve as a model for the rest of the world. Show people that "going green" doesn't mean living like a caveman; you can be environmentally friendly and not have to give up or suffer for it. A green village can be a healthy, safe, and sustainable place to raise and educate children.

Making a household thrive off the grid, or even better, a whole village, is a laudable goal.
