Yes or no to oil production in Lofoten,Norway?
« on: March 27, 2012, 03:14:11 pm »
Yes? What a question is that? I don't want oil production in Norway

I don't know if this was the right section to post this, so moderators, change it, if it was wrong section

Here is the story

This story was from last year

Yes or No to Lofoten oil production?

The Norwegian government will this month present a revised management plan for the Barents Sea and the Lofoten waters. A “yes” to oil production in Lofoten could make the government coalition rupture.

The key issue in the report will be whether or not to open up for a consequence study on regional oil production. While leading representatives of the Labour Party favor a consequence study, the two coalition junior partners are strongly against.

If the Labor Party chooses to push through a decision in the issue, the Socialist Left Party has signaled that it will have to pull out of the coalition. A consequence study is seen as a first step of an industrial development of the resources.

The Lofoten issue has become a key challenge for the government, with the industrially-friendly Labor Party eager to open new promising areas to oil exploration on the one hand and the green-oriented Socialist Left Party and the Centre Party calling for protection of the vulnerable waters on the other.

On Wednesday this week, more than 1000 people rallied in front of the parliament building in Oslo calling for an oil ban in Lofoten.

Sources in the Labour Party now signal that Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg will choose not to take the issue further. The government coalition is more important than a Lofoten consequence study, they say to newspaper Dagbladet.

A compromise in the issue could eventually be that new and extended areas are made available to drilling in the Barents Sea. For now, that might satisfy the hungry oil industry, which already has signaled that it is ready to start exploring the promising areas in the newly delimited waters in the region.

It also remains a question how long the environmentalists will be able to protect Lofoten. Afterall, the parliament majority today favors oil exploration in the area. A government takeover by the conservatives could therefore turn the picture and result in a green light for drilling.

Norway in 2006 adopted its management plan for the Barents Sea and the Lofoten waters. The plan opened up for exploration in parts of the Barents Sea, but banned drilling in the vulnerable and oil-rich Lofoten area. The revised plan, the draft of which will be presented in March or April, might change the situation and open the Lofoten waters, as well as vast new areas in the Norwegian and Barents Sea, for the oil industry.

My comment on this:

If they are setting oil prodution in Lofoten, we will be lost. We will lose our biggest food resource in this country. I hope so much that it will not happen. Norway is one of the biggest fish export countries in the world

We will even lose a lot of money, and we will run out of money, and more and more people is going to move out of this country

Tell what you think about this

Opens the oil industry in Lofoten
Petroleum and Energy Ola Borten Moe goes in for controversial oil activity in parts of Lofoten, Vesterålen and Senja from next autumn.

The area includes Nordland VI, part of Lofoten was temporarily closed due to political conflict in 2001.

Now go Borten Moe again on what he calls a careful development in this area so that the oil and fishing industry may in practice prove that they can live together and "play each other better."

Waiting with the rest
At the same time he says that it is entirely proper to open the rest of Lofoten, Vesterålen and Senja, but recommend waiting for the sake of negative reactions from the fishermen.

This excites him on both environmental and fishing interests that will not have any activity in these vulnerable areas, as well as oil industry, which will be completely opened as soon as possible.

They are not only gonna build one oil platform, but many many platforms. They are gonna start with one. If all goes well, more oil platforms are coming. I think that the gouvernment have defeated the protesters :(

But what will happen if there occur an oil leak? Then our entire fish market will collapse, and will be a really poor country. Norway is the biggest country in the world in exporting in the fish market. We will fall way down in that list, if that happens.
The gouvernment better check over again the consequenses of building many oil platforms, that can harm the future of the land, and the population.
If we losing our fish exporting, many people will move out of the country, or move longer south. There is living nearly 240,000 people in Nordland County, and in Troms County there is living nearly 160,000 people, and in Finnmark County is it living over 73,000 people. That is in total nearly half a million people in Northern Norway

The humans have an insatiable thirst for cheap energy, it is what drove them to steel unobtainium, and the land to mine/produce it on Pandora, that same thirst will drive them to exploit fossil fuels in Lofoten region.
There will be accidents, because there always are and always will be, how many, how bad, and how long and severe the consequences of these accident will be I cannot tell. I only hope that they are few and minor with only few and only short term difficulties arising.
While I wish it would not, I believe it will happen because, of money.

Some more news.

Philip Lowe, Director General for Energy of the European Commission, points out the risks of oil drilling in the Arctic, and warning Norway.
EU energy director is skeptical in Norwegian Arctic plans.

A lot of important people in Norway, sitting in the gouvernment losing their faith that oil drilling is bad :(
Many more don't even care anymore. I don't like this.

A party in the gouvernment.

A majority of six to five on the party, of the Centre Party will open the impact of part of Nordland VI area off Lofoten.

Secretary Ane Hansdatter Kismul, former Nature and Youth leader, belonging to the majority.
The Centre Party's program committee voted her with such youth center manager Sandra Borch for a proposal where no new areas off Lofoten and Vesterålen opened, while permissible activity in the part of Nordland VI has already been opened.

It is proposed that also Petroleum and Energy Ola Borten Moe has decided.

The program had two proposals on the table. One was that we should not open any oil activity in the area outside Lofoten and Vesterålen. The second proposal was that we would go in for impact assessment of the area. I chose to support a compromise proposal which says that no new areas outside Lofoten and Vesterålen be opened, but there may be activity in the opened parts of Nordland VI, which opened in 1994, says Kismul.

A lot of people, and important people have warned us Norway to decrease emissions of CO2. I really want us to decrease it, before it is getting worse.

I agree.

Christian Democratic Party in Norway rejects oil drilling in Lofoten

Christian Democratic Party reacted strongly to oil minister's eagerness to drill for oil south of Lofoten.

Christian Democratic Party(CDP/KrF is critical to Ola Borten Moe attempts to further process the coup of the Lofoten, says Parliament Kjell Ingolf Ropstad (CDP) to Newspaper News Agency (ANB).

The reason is that oil minister Ola Borten Moe has been advocated to "proceed with the activity" in some part of the area Nordland 6 which was opened in 1994 but closed by political Stoltenberg I Government in 2001. Opened it accounts for three quarters of Nordland 6, but farther from land.

Opened part of Nordland 6 is the most vulnerable area. It was closed in 2001 because of uncertainty about the effects of oil activities on fisheries and the environment. This uncertainty is still there. Nordland 6 should be treated the same way as the unopened areas, says Christian Democrat spokesman, pointing to the other areas off Lofoten, Vesterålen and Senja.

Christian Democrat spokesman has asked the minister about which new impact for the opened parts of Nordland and received the answer that it is not necessary. In these areas it is "factually and legally" possible to have petroleum in the next parliamentary term, said the response from the oil and energy minister.

The response from Ola Borten Moe clarifies that he and the government thinks it can start drilling in Nordland 6 to fall. From experience we know that Q-minister seems to have planned this. Therefore, it may seem like the government right now, half a year before the election, has entered into a compromise on Lofoten, says Ropstad.

- It is bold of the Center to go to war against the fishermen of the most sensitive and controversial area off Lofoten. Knowledge gathering shows that the largest petroleum resources are expected to be in Nordland 6, so this is a clear priority ahead of fish oil, fossil front renewable resources, says Christian Democrat political environment spokesman.

He points out that there are over 6,500 jobs in the fishing and tourism industry in Lofoten, Vesterålen and Senja.

- On the other hand, the maximum oil industry could provide 1,100 jobs, says Kjell Ingolf Ropstad. (ANB)

I have lost faith on the Norwegian gouvernment :(
The Prime Minister in Norway, Jens Stoltenberg, will open Lofoten for oil drilling, by the 2nd quarter this year. Now I'm really angry >:(
And I'm sad :'(
The battle against oil drilling in Lofoten is lost :(
Now there's nothing to do.
The majority in the Parliament is saying yes for oil drilling in Lofoten.
