Great writeup on the dimensions, wish I had this when I did my avatar but, just from looking at pictures, I think I got it pretty close.

Anyway, here's a decent tutorial on making an Na'vi avatar that most people can follow: http://solarshine.deviantart.com/art/Tutorial-My-Na-vi-Avatar-148059821

I used the burn tool to create my markings and I think this works out a little better but it does loose some color and I also didn't have the right brushes when I did it. I think it came out pretty well though. Perhaps a blend of both of those styles would create the most realistic avatar images.

The burn tool is tempting in its ease of use. However, It can be a crutch, and just as dangerous as liquefy, or the dodge tool. Why? while being easy to use it is also hard to control in that the more you use it the more obvious its use becomes, and the remaining aesthetic is far from realistic or painterly.

On two settings when you burn, it'll add more black and keep the color extremely local. On the final setting, it'll over-saturate the darks and the result is jarring and again, far from realistic. Furthermore, using the burn tool is difficult to control, as it must be applied directly to an image, and cannot be edited as a layer.

Using the layer type 'Color burn' is far more economical and controllable, and produces the same effect, however it is less subtly controllable than using the Multiply blending mode. As to which looks better, I am of course biased towards my own work. However, the stripes from the movie models have always been a fairly bright (chroma-wise) shade of dark turquoise/blue, unless in the case of red or orange light. As we're attempting to mimic the movie's models and textures, it is appropriate to keep things saturated. Most of the avatar conversions I've seen online are severely lacking on the saturation and color variation size for the skin, and do not take into account the light of the scene around them from which the photo is taken.

Ah! I was wondering if you would be on these forums. Love how that costume came out for you. Totally going to rock a costume like that for Halloween next year though I'm planning to go with shirtless look and a bow instead of a rifle.

Anyway, awesome costume.

but the facial structure is all wrong, the eyes arent big enough and the stripes don't follow the same cannon

Yeah! I say you go to your plastic surgeon and demand a refund.

:P But in all seriousness, great costume. I'm sure everyone else on the interwebs thought so too.

Good stuff!

Though it would be nice to see the differences between Avatars and native Na'Vi. The main things I've noticed is that Avatars can have more human noses (like with Grace), they have human hands, and have eyebrow hair. But those are only the obvious differences, I was wondering if there are differences in proportions and what not.

Lehrrap Uniltìranyu

The only big thing I noticed as a difference between the Na'Vi and Uniltíranyu is their eyes. Na'Vi have much larger, more feline like eyes, while Uniltíranyu eyes are smaller, a bit more comparable to Human eyes.

So after looking around i tried to make an okay comparison of Grace and Neytiri didn't find a direct portrait so some direct comparisons as with Skxawng's jake are harder.

But looking it over, except for the ears and skin tone it Grace's avatar look more human than Na'vi.
It's quite possible that that is at least part of the, outsider, treatment the Na'vi give to Grace as well.

Interesting side note, Norm's Avatar does look Na'vi (as close as Jake's did)(and from the ONE i could find of norm's) so it could be that they had the 'newer' versions of avatars as opposed to grace's and the others.

Always listening, always learning.

That's what I was thinking, about Jake's and Norm's being newer models. I'll have to take a closer look to the few other avatars we see in the film since it would make sense that they are the older models as well.

I found recently on a forum someone who worked on the making of some avatar and na'vi in 3D for the film! There is Jake's, Norm's and Grace's avatar, and Neytiri. It's really well done and realistic, and you can use it too as reference, though it's not the final avatars... (In fact, Grace's is too chubby... ^^)

Yes i would of thought they would of had "newer" versions becuase Grace already had an avatar before they had got there's. Whilst Jakes and Norms avatar's where grown whilst they where in transit so they might have made some changes the the gene's.
