When the film first came out (and I didnt know this site existed) I made scads of manipulations for friends and myself using Photoshop elements 2.0 (for those who don't know, that is an ancient program) and an Intuous 2 Tablet that I still use regularly. I recently got a copy of CS4, and after reading through this thread, Im stoked about doing a few more of these, and improving on my last pics.

I think the big things to remember about the proportional differences between Humans and Na'vi/Avatar bodies (and most common mistakes) are the ear placement and eye shape. And, of course, making the stripes look natural, with organic shapes and not TOO much darker than the surrounding skin.

Just my two cents  :P

I don't know if this has been brought up, but one thing I noticed is the difference between the Na'vi and avatar feet, more specificially, the toes:

Neytiri is on the left, Jake on the right. Notice that her toes are splayed and wide, while Jake's are close together. Now, it could just be the shot but I feel like it has something to do with this:

Thoughts?

Well that certainly clears up the 4 toes thing. But I'd say that the reason that their feet look different is because of the difference between Avatar and Na'vi physiology.

Wow. That's great. I really enjoyed the post. I thought it was really good and scientific, but not what I expected. I thought you were going to explain the body. Could you do that too? And then, I know the females are different from the males, and that the Na'vi are way taller than humans, but the proportions are obviously way different and they look stupid when I draw them the human way. Please help!

Sran, it's like the Na'vi are missing their second toe in comparison to the Avatars ::)

Hm, srane I was thinking that too but I was just browsing though those body tutorials and found that really interesting  :D I noticed Neytiri's feet because that picture happened to be my wallpaper hahaha.

I may create some sort of "tutorial" explaining body differences in the Na'vi and humans (more like a guide) though it;d be great if Skxawng did one too  ;)

As it turns out that I might be drawing na'vi a little more then expected in the future, I might write/record something in the future concerning anatomy. No garuntees tho

Glad y'all found this helpful :)

It's a good idea, but Jake's avatar only wears shoes for maybe 12 hours total in its entire life. The next three months are spent barefoot, so I don't think shoes are the reason their feet look different.

From what i understand, Na'vi feet have a gripping hallux- that is, their big toes are designed to grip. Judging from their position on the foot, i doubt they're fully opposable, But they are prehensile. One of the many differences that Avatars have from the Na'vi base is digit number and arrangement, not just on the hands, but the feet as well.
I don't have a photo reference handy, but see if you can find some of the screencaps of Neytiri riding Seze. The stirrups of the saddle that rest just below Seze's nares are firmly gripped by the feet.

You're right. I never noticed that before.

Amazing guide. There are so many details here that other tutorials simply don't cover. I've been reading a few of them now, but this examination you present here will surely be the one I'll keep rereading each time I attempt something new.

Any hopes of getting something similar for Norm, and perhaps some "pure na'vi"/actor comparison?

Glad it was helpful! heh, i've noticed a few tutorials out there that completely rip this thread off, but leave out a lot of the most important stuff :P
