I saw a lot of posts here, complaining about not having Photoshop, or some other graphics program. Well, know the other options:

Instead of Photoshop you might as well use The GIMP. Although its user interface is quite dofferent to Photoshop for most uses it's more than a match. http://www.gimp.org/.

If you are in the need of vector illustration you should take a look at Inkscape. It covers most tasks very well. It's no match to Adobe Illustrator though. http://www.inkscape.org

Fonts are copyrighted material. Avatar's signature font is "Papyrus" as you probably know. Now personally I think people should stop using THAT font right know. It's not that I think of the font itself as bad, there're just so few cases where one could use it in a good typography. Frankly I can't think of any case where the font could be used effectively. The problem is: It is used. A lot. In awful ways - just today I went by an advertisment which (ab)used it in ways I hadn't imagined until then.

http://xkcd.com/590/

But if you really insist on using Papyrus, but don't have it. Well, there's a very similar font (kinda like what's Arial to Helvetica) called "Parchment MF". http://www.1001freefonts.com/ParchmentMF.php

However I think it was a better artwork idea to create a really unique and high quality font. I'm kinda surprised, that this wasn't done by the creators of Avatar. If someone want to do that, three's FontForge http://fontforge.sourceforge.net/, but using this program requires substantial knowledge about typography and how computers deal with text. And there's of course , but that program requires even more knowledge. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metafont

[EDIT]: Tricking the attachment METAFONT into the text %)

I have GIMP but have no clue how to use it to "Navifiy" myself.

For 3d animation and stuff like that you might use Blender. Blender is a free 3d Software tool and what I hear it ought to be pretty good although you'll need to get really used to the interface of Blender. That's just as Photoshop and Gimp.

Here's the link to the official Blender Webpage:

For information...

If you like Photoshop, but have issues with the cost; or would like to use The GIMP, but have issues with the menu system, try
http://www.gimpshop.com/.

Quoting from their web-page...
QuoteGIMPshop is a modification of the free/open source GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP), intended to replicate the feel of Adobe Photoshop. Its primary purpose is to make users of Photoshop feel comfortable using GIMP.

It shares all GIMP's advantages, including the long feature list and customisability, while addressing some common criticisms regarding the program's interface: GIMPshop modifies the menu structure to closely match Photoshop's, adjusts the program's terminology to match Adobe's, and, in the Windows version, uses a plugin called 'Deweirdifier' to combine the application's numerous windows in a similar manner to the MDI system used by most Windows graphics packages. While GIMPshop does not support Photoshop plugins, all GIMP's own plugins, filters, brushes, etc.

I hope this helps  8)

PS - a plug-in for The GIMP to allow use of Photoshop Plug-ins http://tml.pp.fi/gimp/pspi.html

Windows NT .. XP
To make the font available system wide under Window go to "My Computer -> System Control -> Fonts", there "File -> Install Fonts". Then a old school file selector box, that could be from Windows 3.11 opens, Use that to browse for the new font files to install.

Windows Vista / 7
Don't have it, probably the same way

MacOS X
Open Finder, go to directory Library/Fonts (non english Versions translate the directory names) install font file by means of Drag'n'Drop

Linux - now this is a bit convoluted. Traditionally there are 3 different software classes dealing with font: X11, Ghostscript and if installed a TeX system. Each of them has their own way to manage fonts. Most distributions bring easy to use tools for the enduser which deal with the dirty stuff in the background. Just look for "Font" in the configuration program. The manual way is described here http://www.faqs.org/docs/Linux-HOWTO/Font-HOWTO.html#AEN605

No, no, I'll stick to my Photoshop, Illustrator, 3ds Max, and Maya thank you very much. Glad to hear some of you are having better luck than I did though.
