Nice! I really like the photoshop filters -- did you use curves or manually change the contrast?

Ummmm, since it would be bad for a mod to be excessively flaming you...I'm just going to call this crap as the (at most) 3 photoshop filters you've used here is not "original art". I think your signature has more artistic value than this picture. Grah!

P.S. From the film: http://www.learnnavi.org/temp/avatar92.jpg

It is good to see that you are not making written false claims, however it is more or less plagiarism to simply slap a couple filters over an image and call it your own.

edit: 500 posts!

Yeah, I was going to post my painting that I made but it feared it would look too much like I copied you... oh well... I'll post it here though so you can compare:

LOCKED! If the mods are this bad I don't want to see how the regular users are.
Actually, never mind, I really want to read your response to all this...

War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.       - John Stuart Mill

I was able to get my picture to look extremely like his, and all I used was Windows Live Photo Gallery's "Fix" photo features.

I upped the contrast to the max that I could, dropped the brightness to compensate for the increased contrast, messed around with the shadow and highlights, and did a little messing around with the color settings, and that was the result.

I like how this one turned out.

Looks like someone is telling Neytiri a ghost story around a camp fire...

Not sure I really like the tone of this thread... but I'm glad someone has finally snapped regarding the use of Photoshop filters and copy-paste to make 'art'.

But FWIW, this is one of the relatively few forum areas that I look at every new post - and there really are some cool people trying very hard to produce original artwork (as original as you can get based on someone else's vision anyway). Some of it's good, some of it's horrible, but I like to see their connection to the material and that the subject inspires them to try.

To be honest I only used 1 filter and the rest I used Brushes and the pencil tool. Also this isn't the same Image. I traced over with the image, with a pencil tool added shades and color and multiple layers. I'm going to be coming out with a video to show my work and how I do it but every time I do some people tend to hit the Image with some ruff comments, but anyway if you want me to make a video then send me a message.

Umm it might not be my place to say this, but I feel it needs to be said:-
There is some nicely executed photoshop (and Windows Live Photo Gallery) work here.
It's not particularly high level stuff, but...

However please remember that we are a community, which revolves around something that, in some ways, belongs to the same folks who own the intellectual property right to the images modified here (Fox).
Tread carefully, we need them on side if we want them to allow Na'vi to flourish.

While we appreciate your concern, I highly doubt that they would go after random small people manipulating images that they have released. Furthermore I doubt that they would hold a website responsible for users making and posting such manipulations. They are most assuredly more concerned with pirated video, soundtracks, and other media which they sell. If they were concerned with images and image manipulations, large sites like deviantart would have a lot of trouble, or a lot stricter guidelines regarding site use.

What is key here is that no one here is posting images or creating images with the expressed intent to sell, and even if they were, so long as the images were original, unique content (this doesn't mean it needs to be unique thematically) they couldn't hold anyone but the artist accountable. And even then, they'd be hard pressed to win a case unless it was extremely clear that the image for sale in question was a slightly modified version of another work.

This is currently the issue, as it would appear to me, and to many others, that the work that was originally presented in this topic is in fact, a high-res screenshot from the movie with a couple photoshop filters slapped on. We are omaticaya claims it to be some kind of long drawn-out process, this has yet to be seen. The images following his original post seem to have been made for satirical reasons.
